Pass It On by Gloria J. McEwen Burgess and illustrated by Gerald Purnell is a children's picture book about the author's father, Earnest McEwen Jr., and his life-changing relationship with Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Faulkner.

As a young boy, Ernie (Earnest McEwen Jr.) dreamed of a better life for his family in the segregated South of the 1930s. More than anything, he wanted to go to college.

While working as a janitor at Ol' Miss (the University of Mississippi), Ernie spoke to a professor about his burning desire to go to college, setting in motion a series of events that would change his and his family's life for all time. One of those significant events was meeting Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Faulkner.

Faulkner helped Ernie attend college, paying for his tuition and expenses with no strings attached. His generous financial gift allowed Ernie to go to college, move out of the South, and eventually emerge from poverty. Ernie made a better life for his family, who continue to live a legacy of life-long learning and service, passing on their blessings to the next generation and the next, creating a ripple effect that will bless generations to come.

Kirkus Review
Pass It On
by Gloria J. McEwen Burgess and illustrated by Gerald Purnell

An author and inspirational speaker offers a picture-book biography of her father that explores segregation and access to education.

Set during the 1930s in a segregated Mississippi, Burgess' (Flawless Leadership, 2016, etc.) work chronicles how, as a boy, Earnest McEwen Jr. loved to read anything he could get his hands on. His black parents both worked in the cotton fields, and Ernie dreamed of a better life for his family. He wanted to go to college. Ernie finished high school, where he met his future wife, Millie. After getting a job as a janitor at the University of Mississippi, he met two professors who introduced him to William Faulkner. The author changed Ernie's life by paying his tuition to Alcorn, a university for black students. "Pass it on"--the only repayment Faulkner requested--became Ernie's motto, which he gave to his daughters, as explained in the author's note at the end. The superb story is full of hope, showing people reaching across boundaries to help one another and provide a better life for the next generation. The details in Purnell's (A Homerun for Bunny, 2013, etc.) beautifully realistic paintings and his attention to the faces of his subjects draw in readers. In this book, initially funded via Kickstarter, Burgess' vocabulary is accessible. While she never talks down to readers, she presents the material in an approachable fashion. This excellent and uplifting account of a grim American era promotes hope and kindness.

Great Shelves! Drywall Anchors are the Bomb!
These shelves are very plain as I hoped they would be so as to not take away from the items displayed. The blue is true to the images so I was impressed by that. Word of knowledge: if you do not hit any studs, don’t use the mollies that came with them; use plastic drywall anchors! They work amazingly well!

Pretty shelves for small space
Size: 17 Inch, Color: Natural
Good quality shelves and easy to install once I used my own stronger anchors and screws. The ones provided were too weak and made the shelf unstable. I had to patch several holes in my wall before installing them correctly. If they had provided better quality anchors I would have rated it 5 stars. Still very happy with my purchase.

Flimsy and doesn’t hold weight
Size: 17 Inch, Color: Natural, Size: 17 Inch, Color: Natural
Do not buy this. The frame this comes with is so small and flimsy. I didn’t even have anything on the shelves yet and they were falling off the wall. The wood is a beautiful color but the quality is awful. I had different floating shelves on the same wall and I included a picture of the thick metal frame those came with, also from Amazon to show how flimsy this brand is.

Really nice shelves well-made
Size: 30 Inch, Color: Walnut, Size: 30 Inch, Color: Walnut
I recently installed a set of floating wooden shelves above my kitchen sink, and they have completely transformed the space. The natural wood grain adds warmth and character, making my kitchen feel more open and inviting. The shelves are sturdy and well-made, supporting everything from dishware to small plants and decorative items without any sagging. Installation was straightforward, with the included hardware making it easy to mount them securely. I was pleasantly surprised by how well they hold weight while maintaining a sleek, minimalistic look. The floating design gives a clean, uncluttered aesthetic, which is exactly what I was looking for. Functionally, they’ve made a huge difference. I can now keep everyday essentials like mugs and spices within easy reach while freeing up valuable counter space. They’re also a great alternative to upper cabinets, preventing the area above my sink from feeling closed in. Overall, these floating wooden shelves are both practical and stylish. Whether you’re looking to add storage or just enhance your kitchen’s design, they’re a fantastic option. I highly recommend them for anyone wanting a simple yet impactful upgrade to their space!

Look nice, not sturdy or supportive
Size: 17 Inch, Color: Dark Blue
The color and thickness of the shelf is great. Very easy to install. But the wall mount portion is cheaply made and doesn’t support the shelf as well as it should. Once mounted the shelf leans forward and isn’t sturdy. After mounting, I found my items had slid off end up on the floor.
