Out of colonial Natchitoches, in northwestern Louisiana, emerged a sophisticated and affluent community founded by a family of freed slaves. Their plantations eventually encompassed 18,000 fertile acres, which they tilled alongside hundreds of their own bondsmen. Furnishings of quality and taste graced their homes, and private tutors educated their children. Cultured, deeply religious, and highly capable, Cane River's Creoles of color enjoyed economic privileges but led politically constricted lives. Like their white neighbors, they publicly supported the Confederacy and suffered the same depredations of war and political and social uncertainties of Reconstruction. Unlike white Creoles, however, they did not recover amid cycles of Redeemer and Jim Crow politics.

First published in 1977, The Forgotten People offers a socioeconomic history of this widely publicized but also highly romanticized community--a minority group that fit no stereotypes, refused all outside labels, and still struggles to explain its identity in a world mystified by Creolism.

Now revised and significantly expanded, this time-honored work revisits Cane River's "forgotten people" and incorporates new findings and insight gleaned across thirty-five years of further research. This new edition provides a nuanced portrayal of the lives of Creole slaves and the roles allowed to freed people of color, tackling issues of race, gender, and slave holding by former slaves. The Forgotten People corrects misassumptions about the origin of key properties in the Cane River National Heritage Area and demonstrates how historians reconstruct the lives of the enslaved, the impoverished, and the disenfranchised.

Must Read for Serious Bible Students
Format: Kindle
Grasping God’s Word has become an invaluable resource for my exegesis students. One of them said it best: “I’ll never read the Bible the same way after reading this.”

A true game changer!!
Format: Hardcover
This book will singlehandedly transform the way you study the bible. If you've been scratching your head while reading the bible or have looked at your devotional time as a sort of chore, this book will give you the tools you need to become a student of scripture and be able to focus on the meat of the bible when all you've been previously getting is pureed baby food lol. Don't be intimated by the fact that this textbook is used in some colleges and seminaries; it is highly approachable to the layperson. The assignments at the end of each chapter are exceptionally well thought out and helpful in reinforcing the concepts that are taught. I highly suggest doing them as you read along. This is the only book I've read that gets down and dirty with the concepts and explains them in a way that will give you plenty of "a-ha!" moments along the way. I've read so many books on studying/interpreting the bible, and this one is hands down the best one to give you a solid foundation. To quote from the book, "Study the bible not just to learn more about God but to know and love Him more." Buy this book; you won't regret it.

Learn to grasp God’s word
Format: Hardcover
This book is awesome for any Christian wanting to learn more about how to interpret CORRECTLY and understand the Bible, God’s Word, which was written thousands of years ago to a different culture and period but want to learn how to apply it to today, without taking any of it out of context, which many people do today. If you have ever read scripture and asked yourself why a loving God allowed a specific event in the Bible to occur or thought that verse is irrelevant to today, you NEED this book! The Bible is the only book ever written that can span millenniums and be as equally relevant to every culture and time period throughout history. This is not an easy read but a necessary one if you want to strengthen your walk with Jesus, our savior.

Not bad; not your father's hermeneutics construct, however
Format: Hardcover
Very different approach to hermeneutics. I think their five step construct, or "journey," is a little more complicated than it needs to be. On the other hand, the construct is helpful to the layman because it gets the reader to recognize that the biblical cultural-historical-theological frame of reference needs to be understood in today's sense before an accurate interpretation can be rendered and then properly (or correctly) applied. Rather than send the reader to a plethora of works that offer such explanations, the authors should consider adding a chapter that provides an explanation on the most common differences between then and now on the subject and leave the reader to seek more detail in these other works. As it is, I feel left wanting for this understanding. Now, I like the videos of each chapter in the electronic edition; most of these do a good job communicating the chapter.
