As the 1970s ended, Waits felt increasingly constrained and trapped by his persona and career. Bitter and desperately unhappy, he moved to New York in 1979 to change his life. It wasn't working. But at his low point, he got the phone call that changed everything: Francis Ford Coppola tapped Tom to write the score for One From the Heart. Waits moved back to Los Angeles to work at Zoetrope's Hollywood studio for the next 18 months. He cleaned up, disciplined himself as a songwriter and musician, collaborated closely with Coppola, and met a script analyst named Kathleen Brennan - his only true love.
They married within 2 months at the Always and Forever Yours Wedding Chapel at 2am. Swordfishtrombones was the first thing Waits recorded after his marriage, and it was at Kathleen's urging that he made a record that conceded exactly nothing to his record label, or the critics, or his fans. There aren't many love stories where the happy ending sounds like a paint can tumbling in an empty cement mixer.
Kathleen Brennan was sorely disappointed by Tom's record collection. She forced him out of his comfortable jazzbo pocket to take in foreign film scores, German theatre, and Asian percussion. These two stories of a man creating that elusive American second act, and also finding the perfect collaborator in his wife give this book a natural forward drive.

These work great for home office.

I was looking for something to block background for a home office, so I wouldn't have to use the distracting background filters. These work great and give my backdrop a more professional appearance. They are very easy to install. The box arrived with a few shipping holes, but packaging was sufficient to avoid any product damage.

I bought this AmazingSpark soundproof room divider panel because I work from home and needed a way to separate my workspace from the rest of the room — and honestly, it’s been such a great solution. The 48" x 10' size is big enough to create a true sense of separation, and the foldable design makes it easy to move around or tuck away when I’m done working. I use it mostly in my home office, but I’ve also tried it in our guest room when I needed a little quiet space to focus, and it worked perfectly.
The first thing I noticed was how sturdy and well-made it feels. The fabric panels are thick and tightly stretched, and the frame has a solid feel without being too heavy to move. I really like that it comes with straps and a stand, so it stays put even if you have pets or kids running around. The neutral grey color blends nicely into any space — it looks sleek and professional but still warm enough to fit in a home environment.
As for soundproofing, it’s not total silence (no panel really is), but it makes a big difference. It does a great job of dampening echo and blocking background noise, especially when I’m on calls or recording audio. It’s been a huge improvement compared to the open room I had before. I even noticed my space feels cozier and less “echoey” during Zoom meetings.
Setting it up was straightforward — it took me about 15 minutes by myself. The panels fold like an accordion, so you can easily adjust how much space you want to block off, and it’s easy to collapse and store when you don’t need it. The handles and lightweight construction make moving it from one room to another surprisingly easy for its size.
One little thing to note: if you have hardwood floors, it helps to put something soft underneath the stand to prevent sliding when you bump it. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it made a small difference for me. Other than that, it’s super stable and does exactly what I needed.
What I really appreciate is that it’s multi-functional — I use it as a sound barrier for work, but we’ve also pulled it out to create a bit of privacy when guests stay over or when I just want to section off a reading nook. It instantly changes the feel of a space.
Overall, this divider has been practical, stylish, and surprisingly effective. It gives me more control over noise and privacy, looks great, and folds up easily when not in use. If you work or study from home and need a quick way to carve out a quiet corner, this thing is absolutely worth it.

Light enough for one person to move, sturdy and so versatile

The AmazingSpark Soundproof room divider panel has been a fantastic addition to my classroom. Its sound-absorbing design noticeably reduces noise, which makes small group instruction, testing sessions, and independent work time much more manageable. The panel is lightweight yet sturdy. The included stand and straps keep it securely in place. I appreciate how easily it folds - setup and storage take only a minute, which is perfect for transitioning from one activity to another. The grey color looks clean and professional, and I can use push-pins to hang displays on the board. The divider delivers exactly what teachers need: privacy, noise reduction, flexibility, and durability. The noise reduction feature has been beneficial in my classroom when students are recording projects. While the class is working quietly on other activities, a small group can move to the opposite side of the panel and record their audio files. When we listened to the files, we could not hear any background noises, with the exception of the noises they wanted in their recording. This panel is made to last, and I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for an acoustic panel that is flexible. The panel is extremely versatile, and because of that, I think it is a good value for the money.
