The Blackmagic Design Spares - ATEM Constellation 8K - Fan refers to the high-performance cooling units located within the 2RU chassis. Given the immense heat generated by 8K processing and 40 channels of 12G-SDI, the Constellation 8K utilizes a sophisticated thermal management system consisting of a primary fan bank and dedicated power supply fans.

Maintaining these fans is critical; if the central FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) overheats, the unit will "thermal throttle," leading to dropped frames or a total system shutdown to prevent permanent hardware damage.

Fan Configuration

The Constellation 8K typically utilizes two types of fans:

  • Main Chassis Fans: Usually a bank of 3 or 4 high-CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) blowers located in the center or rear of the unit. These pull cool air across the Mezzanine and Main PCBs.

  • PSU Internal Fans: Each 400W Power Supply module contains its own dedicated small-form-factor fan to prevent the voltage regulators from overheating.

When to Replace a Fan

  • "Fan Failure" Warning: The front panel LCD or the ATEM Software Control displays a critical alert indicating a specific fan has stopped spinning.

  • High-Pitched Whining (Bearing Failure): If the unit sounds like a "jet engine" or emits a grinding noise, the ball bearings inside the fan have dried out or failed.

  • Intermittent Thermal Reboots: The switcher works for 20 minutes, then suddenly shuts down or glitches. This is often caused by a fan that spins up but fails to reach the required RPM under load.

  • Excessive Dust Accumulation: If a fan has been operated in a dusty environment, the blades can become heavy or the motor can burn out from the added resistance.

Technical Installation Note

Repair Level: 2 (Moderate).

  1. Safety First: Unplug both AC power cords. Even when "off," the redundant power system maintains standby voltages that can be hazardous.

  2. The Cooling Shroud: In the Constellation 8K, the fans are often housed under a plastic or metal "shroud" that directs airflow. You must carefully remove this shroud to access the fan headers on the Main PCB.

  3. Pin Polarities: These are typically 3-pin or 4-pin PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) fans. Ensure the connector is notched correctly; forcing it on backward can damage the fan controller on the motherboard.

  4. Airflow Direction: Fans have a small arrow on the plastic casing indicating the direction of airflow. Crucial: Ensure the replacement fan is blowing in the same direction as the original (typically exhausting hot air out the side or rear).

Diagnostic: Dust vs. Failure

Before ordering a replacement, try these steps:

  • Compressed Air: Power down the unit and use a can of compressed air to blow out the vents. If a fan was simply "stuck" due to a dust bunny, this might fix it.

  • The "Spin Test": With the unit open and power off, flick the fan blades with a plastic tool. If it stops immediately (rather than spinning freely), the motor is seized and needs replacement.

Pro-Tip: The "Machine Room" Effect

The Constellation 8K fans are designed to be audible because of the cooling required for 8K video. If you find the fans are constantly at 100% (max volume), check the ambient temperature of your rack. If the rack is above 30°C (86°F), the fans will never slow down. Improving your rack's overall ventilation can extend the lifespan of these fans by years.

Is your switcher reporting a specific fan number failure on the front screen, or are you just hearing an unusual noise from the chassis?

Works well has plenty of pressure.
It is a great device, a bit awkward to use over a bowl sink, but with some minor adjustment of the nozzle, it works well. It appears to be as effective as most water picks and I like not having to fool with a hose, that can break.

Needed replacement, 2nd one works OK
The first one I received had a broken latching mechanism. Not a shipping issue, as the box was fine, it just wouldn't latch the attachments because the mechanism wouldn't come all the way out. After getting a replacement the 2nd one worked better. It has 3 settings for soft, normal, and pulse. For me, the normal put out the best force for clearing out bits. After washing with it for about 30 seconds though I still don't feel it cleans we well as real floss, or even a waterpik, but it does help after brushing. I will add it to my routine as it does help flush out some things, but it won't be replacing my flossing. It is sort of portable, in that can be packed away and holds a charge, but it's still pretty large and takes up a good amount of space in a toiletry bag. It's not bad, but not really outstanding either.

I like this better than my name brand unit
🔵 Features: The water pick boasts a generously sized reservoir, which is a standout feature. It also comes with a convenient USB charger, offers 3 speed settings (normal, soft, and pulse), and features quick and easy detachable heads. 🔵 Power: In terms of power, comparing it to my current unit revealed no noticeable differences in pressure or volume to the naked eye. Both units effortlessly deliver a stream of water up to 12 feet. 🔵 Heads: The water pick includes a plethora of heads, more than most people would likely need. Personally, I would have preferred a lifetime supply of the simple angled head picks, but the variety provided caters to all preferences. 🔵 Overall: After using it for a few days, I found that it performs admirably. When placed side by side with my old unit, I consistently reach for the 7AM2M unit, primarily due to its larger reservoir. In all other aspects, I find them comparable, and I wholeheartedly recommend this water pick to others.

Well designed portable water flosser that's holding up so far
There are a number of such portable water flossers on Amazon, but this is one of the better ones IMO. The water pressure is adequate, with enough settings to allow you to ramp up (or keep using on a lower setting if desired). One nice feature is that the tank detaches easily and this makes filling under a tap easier than other units which don't have an easily detached tank. The tank shape is also a bit fatter so it's not too long along any one dimension. The tank capacity of 300 ml is adequate for a single use. The standard suite of flosser heads are included - flossing itself, peridontal, and one for braces. The tongue cleaner attachment is also there but I prefer to use a separate tongue cleaner tool. Charging is via USB-C and while the port isn't super water proof, there's no damage to the unit yet. Battery life is typical at about 20-30 days with twice a day usage.
