Artists began coming to New Mexico in the late nineteenth century. They came from everywhere, from Maine to California and a few from Europe. They were attracted by the dazzling New Mexican landscape, the hospitality of town and village life, and very important, the Indian and Hispanic cultures that had shaped the artistic imagination of New Mexico for centuries. From an artist's point of view it was a rich mix, and between art and odd jobs, they managed to make a living. Until the Great Depression of the 1930s. Then, as the artist Louie Ewing said, "the jobs ran out." No matter what you were willing to do, there was no work, and nobody was buying pictures and pots. Help came from Washington. New Deal planners offered artists jobs to "beautify" the community. Almost immediately, artists in New Mexico picked up their brushes and chisels, and for almost ten years, between 1933 and 1943, signed onto Federal programs. How did artists, traditionally loners, like working for the government? When the Santa Fe artist William Lumpkins was asked, he said: "We thought it was heaven on earth to be paid to paint." Fortunately, many New Deal artists had the opportunity to speak for themselves. In state-sponsored interviews they tell us in their own words what the New Deal art programs meant to them. Their rich interpretations of that experience and a selection of the work they produced is what this book is about. JACQUELINE HOEFER's publications include "Imagining the Garden," a book of poems; Weather Songs, three poems set to music by Lanham Deal; and critical essays on contemporary writers, among them, Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter and Norman Mailer. Her latest book is "Night in a White Wood, New and Selected Poems." Mrs. Hoefer received a PhD in American literature from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, and in the early 1960s taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and at San Francisco State University. In 1967, she joined her husband Peter Hoefer in starting Hoefer Scientific Instruments, a San Francisco company specializing in producing instruments for biological research. After Peter Hoefer's death in 1987, she carried on as chief executive officer.

Quality is not there, I am very disappointed!
Color: Pink, Color: Pink
I am one of those very rare ladies that will wait until her previous purse is on its last leg before I buy a new one. That is when I decided I needed this one. Once I opened the package I noticed a very distinct odor, it was very obviously the purse and it was not a "new" smell it was very off-putting. The purse does not seem very durable as I noticed loose threads throughout the lining of the purse. I was also a little disappointed that this purse is so large but it only had one very large square pocket on the inside. The only reason I gave this more than one star is because of the two very nice pockets on the purse front. I appreciate what they were trying to do, I do not think they were quite up to par on the quality, I would not recommend this item.

Beautifully Branded and Roomy Tote Bag
This bag arrived well packaged. It was enclosed in a plastic sleeve that had a cardboard insert covering 2 sides of the bag. The bag was also inside a cloth type bag that is usually reserved for expensive purses/bags. There was also protective material covering the bag’s handle and clasp. The packaging protected the bag and there were no damage when received. When I removed the bag from its packaging, the “NK” excited and confused me. At first glance, I thought that I had mistakenly received THE designer bag with similar logo branding. There are decorative zippers on the front of the bag which uniquely camouflage 2 roomy front pockets. This was a great idea since it enables me to store items there (keys, coin purse, mints) without having to enter the bag’s main compartment to retrieve them. The closing clasps operate without incident and compliment the look of the bag. The handle allows you to throw it over the shoulder or just carry in your hands. The inside is very roomy, is nicely lined and has a pocket where you can slip items in so they don’t get lost inside the bag. The roominess of the bag reminds me more of a tote bag than a purse. Overall, this is a really nice bag that I am proud to own.

Trendy And Well Made Purse!
This is a take on a very popular style, and fairly well done. As you can see photographed here, this is a reasonably large-sized purse which you could use to and from the office, or almost as a day bag. The clasping mechanism on the top is cute, it ensures everything is contained and naturally folds the top over to give you a little bit more room under the arm. The metal accents and zippers are well done. The material feels nice although it does have a slight off gassing initially so you might want to air it out the first day. Otherwise reasonable construction and quality give this an easy five stars.

Stylish, Spacious, and Perfectly Chic!
The GEMIU Women’s Large Logo-Print Hobo Shoulder Bag is absolutely amazing! The design is trendy and fashionable, making it a standout accessory for any outfit. It’s surprisingly spacious, easily holding all my essentials without feeling bulky. The shoulder strap is comfortable, and the bag feels well-made and durable for daily use. I also love the quality of the materials—they look high-end and are built to last. This bag perfectly combines style and practicality, and I’ve already received so many compliments on it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a chic, versatile handbag!

Cute and roomy
This is a roomy and well made purse. It's a modern and chic style as well. The print is well made and the materials are good. It isn't really stiff but does have structure. The straps are stitched nicely and made of a medium brown leather like material. It's a really cute bag that is decently made so it's a great price for the value.
