The John Lofgren US Navy N-1 Field Shoes, often referred to as “Boondockers,” trace their origins back to the Pacific theater of World War II. First issued in 1943, the N-1 field shoe was designed for sailors and Marines who required dependable footwear capable of handling rough terrain, humidity, and long deployments. The nickname “Boondocker” stems from the Tagalog word “bundok,” meaning mountain or remote terrain, a term adopted by American servicemen stationed in the Philippines.
John Lofgren’s interpretation remains extremely faithful to the historical original while elevating it through meticulous Japanese craftsmanship. Built around the reproduction N-1 last, developed from an authentic vintage pair, the boot captures the unmistakable profile of the original military footwear. The uppers are crafted from Horween Natural Roughout Chromexcel leather, a 2,0 – 2,3 mm oil-infused leather produced in Chicago. Over time, the roughout surface develops remarkable texture and character as it absorbs wear, dust, and movement.
Construction follows the same uncompromising standards seen throughout John Lofgren’s work. The boots feature Goodyear welt construction, heavy single, triple and quadruple stitching, and Japanese-made steel shanks for structural support. Underfoot, John Lofgren Bootmaker original WWII-style soles and heels, produced in Japan, provide durability and traction while preserving the authentic silhouette of the original military issue boots.
Compared with other Lofgren service boot styles, the N-1 Boondocker stands apart through its military-specific last and historical proportions. The profile is slightly more utilitarian and direct, reflecting its wartime origins, while the roughout leather emphasizes practicality and resilience. The result is footwear that feels purposeful rather than decorative.
The LK-042 Boondocker is more than a reproduction. It is a carefully executed continuation of a design that proved itself under some of the toughest conditions imaginable. Built in Japan with premium American leather, it carries forward the legacy of the original N-1 field shoe — ready to be worn, broken in, and shaped by years of real use.
