De zwarte walnotenboom, of Juglans nigra, is een grote, bladverliezende boom afkomstig uit Noord-Amerika. Hij wordt vooral aangeplant vanwege zijn waardevolle hout, maar ook voor de eetbare noten die hij produceert. In tegenstelling tot de meer bekende gewone walnoot (Juglans regia), heeft de zwarte walnoot een stevigere bast, donkerder blad en produceert hij noten met een bijzonder harde schaal.

Groeiwijze en standplaats

De zwarte walnoot groeit relatief snel en kan uiteindelijk een hoogte van 20 tot 30 meter bereiken. De kroon is breed en rond, met diep ingesneden, geveerd blad dat in de herfst geel kleurt. De boom vraagt veel ruimte en is daarom minder geschikt voor kleine tuinen. Hij groeit het best op diepe, voedzame en goed doorlatende bodems, bij voorkeur in de volle zon. Op arme of natte grond blijft de groei achter en kan de wortelontwikkeling beperkt blijven. Een soort wat we ook veel verkopen is de Juglans regia. Dit is de bekendste.

Wortelgroei en invloed op omgeving

Een belangrijk kenmerk van de zwarte walnoot is dat de boom de stof juglon afscheidt via de wortels. Deze natuurlijke stof remt de groei van veel andere planten in de directe omgeving, zoals tomaten, appels of esdoorns. Dit maakt hem minder geschikt voor gemengde aanplant of moestuinen. De wortels zijn krachtig en kunnen verhardingen of leidingen beïnvloeden.

Bloei en vruchtvorming

De bloei vindt plaats in mei of juni met onopvallende bloemen. De mannelijke bloemen groeien in hangende katjes; de vrouwelijke bloemen zijn kleiner en staan solitair. Bestuiving gebeurt door de wind. De noten rijpen in de herfst en zitten in een dikke, ruwe bolster. De schil is zeer hard, wat het kraken lastig maakt, maar de smaak van de noot wordt gewaardeerd, zij het minder zoet dan die van de gewone walnoot.
