Now who is Catrina? You've seen her during every festival surrounding the Day of the Dead; the woman in elaborate clothing and a face of bone. Her origins trace back to Mictēcacihuātl – the queen of the Aztec underworld of Chicunamictlan. Her role was to watch over the bones of the dead and greet the dead when they broke through the veil. The term Catrina followed long after, as a political commentary that those with the worst greed are exactly the same in the end as that of the most humble pauper. In the end, they equally reduce to rot and bone.

I was compelled to design this shirt to release the energy of these truths bottled up inside me. I believe in the power behind decomposition, I believe the Monarchs are messengers, I believe people who think they are more noble because they hoard riches are fools. We tend to adore Halloween in the U.S. and approve of Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico. It would serve us all to continue to ask deeper questions of why.
