그랜드 피아노와 달리 업라이트 피아노는 수직으로 현이 배열되어 있으며 수직 향판과 브리지도 있습니다. 업라이트 피아노와 유사한 첫 번째 변종은 1739년에 등장했고, 보다 현대적인 변종은 1800년에 나타났습니다. 철제 프레임과 더 넓은 옥타브 범위를 추가하여 악기가 개선되면서 대량 생산이 이어졌습니다. 컴팩트한 크기와 저렴한 가격으로 인해 많은 소규모 음악당, 술집 및 개인 주택에서 사용되는 인기가 높아졌습니다.
