ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
"Through food, we tell our history, share our resilience, and fight against erasure. 2 years into a genocide, it is more important than ever to preserve our foodways and uplift those who are doing work around food sovereignty." - Jinan Deena. Led by Jinan, this workshop will explore how Palestinian cuisine serves as a powerful tool for cultural preservation.
Jinan will guide attendees through different aspects of Palestinian food from its agricultural roots and resilience, the growing community of chef activists in the US, to the impact of cultural appropriation and effects of boycotts. Small bites and beverages will be served.
ABOUT JINAN
Jinan Deena is a Palestinian American chef and activist based in Washington, DC. She founded Bayti (meaning "my home" in Arabic) in 2022 after seeing the community's reaction to authentic Palestinian cuisine at her first pop-up in 2021. Bayti combines her two loves- Palestinian activism and food. Palestinian food has suffered from erasure and appropriation, and her popups have helped reclaim authentic and traditional cusine, introducing it to the DC community and beyond. She has hosted events in DC, Ohio, Connecticut, and New York. Her work has been featured in the Washington City Paper, BBC, Washington Post, District Fray, Eater DC, DCist, and more.
