Mometasone

Mometasone is part of a group of medicines called corticosteroids. Commonly known as 'steroids', these medications help reduce inflammation and are frequently used to manage conditions such as asthma, Crohn’s disease, and lichen planus.

Mometasone is applied directly to the areas of your body that need it to help reduce swelling and itching. It can calm inflamed skin caused by a rash. You can get Mometasone as either an ointment or a cream. Both are good for people with dry skin, but they work a bit differently. Creams are easy to spread and usually absorb quickly, whereas ointments are thicker and create a protective barrier over the skin. Your clinician will prescribe the form of Mometasone they believe will be most beneficial for you.

Lichen planus is a rash that isn't contagious and results in bumps forming on your skin. These bumps are generally red-purple and raised. The appearance of the rash can differ; sometimes, the bumps have white lines running through them, known as Wickham’s striae. This condition can spread to the ankles, leading to thicker, scaly patches, which is referred to as hypertrophic lichen planus. Usually, the rash affects your skin, mouth, and genitals.

When your skin gets irritated or has an allergic reaction, it releases chemicals. These chemicals make your blood vessels widen, which can cause itching, redness, and swelling. Corticosteroids, such as Mometasone, help by preventing your skin from reacting in this manner and stopping the release of the chemicals that lead to inflammation.

Histamine is one of the chemicals involved in this reaction. When your body identifies something like dust, pollen, or pet hair as an allergen, it releases histamine to fight off these foreign invaders. If too much histamine is produced, it can lead to excessive sneezing and itching. Antihistamines help to soothe this immune response, and topical corticosteroids are used in a similar way for skin conditions.

Mometasone inhalers are used for asthma treatment, while mometasone nasal sprays help with hay fever and allergic rhinitis.

Topical corticosteroids are typically the first treatment suggested for lichen planus.

The cream and ointment are both effective in treating the redness and swelling from the rash. Clobetasol propionate, another corticosteroid, is also sometimes prescribed for this condition and works well to reduce itchiness. Similar to Mometasone, it is available as an ointment and cream, and also comes in a shampoo and a scalp treatment.

Topical Mometasone is generally effective for treating lichen planus. However, if the rash is severe and doesn't improve with topical treatments, you may be given corticosteroid tablets. These are meant for short-term use and can sometimes lead to side effects like weight gain and trouble sleeping.

Antihistamines could be another option to help manage your lichen planus. They can relieve itchiness from allergies, which might be worsening your symptoms.

While there aren't many studies specifically on the effectiveness of Mometasone for treating lichen planus, topical corticosteroids are often used for this condition. In addition to lichen planus, corticosteroids are commonly prescribed for other skin conditions such as eczema, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis.

Mometasone might not be suitable in certain cases, such as if your skin is infected or you have acne. However, most adults can usually use corticosteroids safely, making them a reliable choice for managing skin rashes.
