Travaglini Gattinara Riserva is a stunning 100% Nebbiolo wine from cool, mountainous vineyards in Northern Piedmont. Made only in the best vintage years, this is a top-level wine from one the area's most distinguished producers. Savoury, complex, ethereal and structured, flavours of cherries, wild berries, spice, and a mineral backbone.
Located in the Gattinara DOCG of Alto-Piemonte, Travaglini is a historic producer of Nebbiolo-based wines in Alto-Piemonte. Piedmont is home to some of the world's most famous wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, but these denominations make up just 3% of the regions offering. Further north, nestled in the foothills of the Alps is Alto-Piemonte, an area which has always taken a back seat to their attention-grabbing cousins, but more recently is seeing a resurgence in popularity and critical acclaim for producing incredible quality Nebbiolo alternatives at undisputable value.
2015 was an exceptional vintage for Piedmont - a cool winter followed by a very warm and dry Spring/Summer, which made for very healthy grapes and consistent bunches. There was no doubt that this should be a year for Travaglini to produce their renowned Gattinara Riserva wine, which is only made in top vintage years. The Nebbiolo grapes were carefully selected and hand harvest to ensure only the best fruit was picked. After crushing there is a maceration period of around 15 days before fermentation in stainless steel. A traditional vinification with aging for 14 months in large oak and a small portion in new and used barriques, followed by 4 years of refinement in bottle.
Freshness, balance, and power - this Italian Nebbiolo wine will not disappoint. Delicious with roast game, meat-based pasta dishes such as Bolognese ragù and aged cheeses.
