The history of the ETIMO Crochet Hook with Cushion Grip goes back to 2008. That year coincided with the 60th anniversary of the founding of Tulip Company Limited. This product is the fruit of trial and error in search of the best shape and material to meet customer demand for a crochet hook that does not fatigue the hand after long hours spent crocheting. Tulip now offers a limited model of the ETIMO Crochet Hook with Cushion Grip, dyed the indigo color produced with Awa-Ai, called “Japan Blue.” This prestige set includes 10 cushion grip crochet hooks, an indigo-dyed case, steel scissors, and is encased in a Paulownia wood box. Like the crochet hooks themselves, the case that holds the crochet hooks and tools is also dyed with the indigo Awa-Ai pigment. The indigo liquid dye used is prepared using the technique of natural indigo dyeing by lye fermentation dating back to the Edo period. This safe and eco-friendly dyeing method makes the best use of natural materials while fermenting them. To dye the case used to store crochet hooks and tools for Wa Bi, Tulip has chosen murakumo-zome, a technique of dyeing creased fabric to produce an intricately beautiful indigo pattern that resembles clouds drifting across the sky.
Hand-dyed by skilled craftsmen, no two cases share exactly the same pattern. Inspired by kaishi-ire (a traditional clutch for Japanese tea ceremony and other situations), the case has been meticulously designed so that it can easily store tools and crochet patterns, exuding a distinctive Japanese ambience.
