UNERSTANDING THE RESULTS
Lactose intolerance occurs when the body cannot absorb sufficient amounts of lactose, leading to its passage to the colon, where it can cause diarrhea, gas, and abdominal pain.
To check the level of lactose that your small intestine fails to absorb, Lactose Intolerance Breath Test tests the breath that forms originally in your colon.
Bacteria in your colon, exposed to lactose, form hydrogen and methane gas, which the test detects. The test comprises four breath collections, with one collection before administering 25 grams of lactose.
Using gas chromatography, we measure hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide gas levels in all four tubes. Carbon dioxide gas level checks the breath sample's validity and normalizes the results, in case the breath collection is imperfect.
The hydrogen and methane levels in the 1-, 2-, and 3-hour breath samples are compared to the baseline (0-minute) sample.
If any of the post-lactose samples contain 20 parts per million (ppm) hydrogen and methane gas above the baseline sample, it indicates an intolerance to lactose.
