Corsica has a way of producing wines that feel both ancient and vibrantly alive, and few estates capture that duality better than Clos Venturi. The property sits in the Haute-Corse, inland from the island’s eastern coast, where altitude, mountain winds, and centuries-old soils converge to create one of the most distinctive terroirs in the Mediterranean. The winery is a project of the Venturi family—farming here since the 19th century—who have long been stewards of local varieties and traditional Corsican viticulture. Today, they work organically and biodynamically, focusing on preserving the raw, untamed character that defines their region.
The “1769” line takes its name from the year of Napoleon’s birth, a playful nod to Corsica’s most famous son, but the wines themselves are all about purity and place. The 2022 Rouge is built primarily around Sciaccarellu, the pale, aromatic Corsican red grape known for its finesse and peppery lift, with Niellucciu lending structure and depth. These varieties thrive in the granitic soils and cooling mountain influences surrounding the estate, yielding a wine that is intensely Mediterranean yet refreshingly light on its feet.
In the glass, the 2022 “1769” Rouge is vivid and fragrant—bursting with wild strawberry, crushed herbs, pink peppercorn, and that unmistakable island garrigue. The palate is silky and lifted, with bright, mouthwatering acidity and fine-grained tannins that give the wine a gentle but confident structure.
Food pairings come easily. Think grilled lamb chops seasoned simply with rosemary, roasted chicken draped with olives and lemon, or charcuterie—especially Corsican-style cured meats. It’s also a superb match for tuna niçoise, ratatouille, or any dish that leans into fresh herbs and sun-kissed vegetables. Serve it with a slight chill and you’ll quickly understand why wines like this have become some of the most exciting Mediterranean reds on the table today.
A great value from a rising star in the Corsican wine scene.
