History
The 2008/09 Bundesliga campaign marked the modern high point of Hertha BSC’s history. Under Swiss coach Lucien Favre, Hertha unexpectedly emerged as genuine Bundesliga title contenders for much of the season before ultimately finishing fourth and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
Marko Pantelić became one of the defining faces of Hertha during his four-year spell at the club between 2005 and 2009, scoring 45 goals in 114 appearances. The 2008/09 season was his final campaign in Berlin.
Although Pantelić’s playing time became more limited following the arrival of Andriy Voronin, he still contributed important goals and experience during one of the greatest title races in the club’s modern existence.
Hertha ultimately finished fourth behind Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich, and Stuttgart, narrowly missing out on an even more historic achievement, before Pantelić departed for Ajax in September 2009.
The success proved difficult to sustain. Hertha were relegated the following season and have spent much of the years since fluctuating between the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. As a result, the 08/09 away shirt has become deeply symbolic among supporters, representing the club’s last truly elite-era challenge at the top of German football.
Collector Value
A Nike Hertha Berlin 08/09 away shirt with an authentic Pantelić 9 nameset in 10/10 or BNWT condition typically resells internationally in the NOK 1,500 – NOK 3,000 range.
The 08/09 season remains the most collectible modern Hertha campaign because of Champions League qualification and a surprise Bundesliga title challenge. Player-named editions carry a clear premium over blank versions.
Pantelić editions are especially uncommon because his role was partially reduced during the season following Voronin’s arrival, leading to fewer player-specific shirts entering circulation.
TheFootballIdiots’ NOK 1,699 sits comfortably within the international market for a pristine 10/10 named example.
