Wharfedale ELYSIAN 3R Floorstanding Speaker at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Wharfedale ELYSIAN 3R is the compact floorstanding loudspeaker in the ELYSIAN R Series flagship range from Wharfedale (Huntingdon, UK), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Designed to deliver the authority, openness, and dynamic expression of a high-end three-way floorstander in a slim 263mm-wide cabinet, the ELYSIAN 3R houses dual 7" coated glass fibre matrix bass drivers, a dedicated 6" coated glass fibre matrix midrange driver, and the further-developed 27 x 90mm AMT high-frequency driver with updated ultra-light PET diaphragm and acoustically damped rear chamber. With 89dB sensitivity, a frequency response of 44Hz to 22kHz and bass extension to 35Hz at -6dB, and 108dB peak SPL, the ELYSIAN 3R delivers full-range floorstander bandwidth in a room-friendly footprint.

Dual 7" Bass Drivers and Slim Floorstander Architecture

The ELYSIAN 3R's slim 263mm-wide cabinet achieves its combination of bass authority and compact footprint through dual 7" coated glass fibre matrix bass drivers operating in parallel below the 375Hz crossover point, providing the combined cone area of a single 9.9" equivalent driver while maintaining the controlled pistonic behaviour that smaller individual cone diameters preserve better than a single large-format woofer at equivalent combined area. The bass reflex cabinet is divided into two volumes — 9.4 litres and 35 litres — serving the dual bass driver alignment with separate tuning for optimal low-frequency performance. Wharfedale's SLPP Slot-Loaded Profiled Port reduces turbulence noise at high output levels, enhances bass extension and control to 35Hz at -6dB, and reduces the sensitivity of bass performance to room placement. The slim 263mm cabinet width is identical to the ELYSIAN 1R standmount, allowing the ELYSIAN 3R to occupy a minimal floor footprint in modern listening rooms.

Dedicated Midrange, AMT Tweeter, and Generation R Crossover

The ELYSIAN 3R's dedicated 6" coated glass fibre matrix midrange driver covers 375Hz to 2.9kHz independently of the dual bass drivers, operating with minimal excursion across the vocal and instrumental frequencies where the human ear is most sensitive to distortion and colouration. The further-developed 27 x 90mm AMT high-frequency driver covers frequencies above 2.9kHz with the pleated diaphragm's inherently low distortion and high transient speed, updated in the Generation R version with an ultra-light PET diaphragm and acoustically damped rear chamber for improved resolution and openness. The Generation R crossover uses high-silicon-iron-cored bass coils, air-core midrange and treble coils, Super Audiophile polypropylene capacitors, low-inductance resistors, and direct-path PCBs for the shortest signal path and reduced electromagnetic interference, with tightened driver manufacturing tolerances for improved unit-to-unit acoustic consistency. The ELYSIAN 3R's 2.3 ohm minimum impedance requires amplifiers rated for low-impedance loads — all Accuphase, Hegel, NAD Masters, and Parasound Halo power amplifiers available at Vinyl Sound Toronto are compatible with this requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wharfedale ELYSIAN 3R?

The Wharfedale ELYSIAN 3R is the compact three-way floorstanding loudspeaker in the ELYSIAN R Series flagship range from Wharfedale, Huntingdon, UK. It houses dual 7" coated glass fibre matrix bass drivers, a dedicated 6" midrange driver, and the further-developed 27 x 90mm AMT tweeter in a slim 263mm-wide cabinet with Generation R crossover at 375Hz and 2.9kHz, delivering 44Hz to 22kHz frequency response with 35Hz bass extension, 89dB sensitivity, and 108dB peak SPL.

How does the ELYSIAN 3R compare to the ELYSIAN 2R and ELYSIAN 4R?

The ELYSIAN 3R is a self-supporting floorstander versus the ELYSIAN 2R's standmount format, providing floor placement without dedicated stands and dual 7" bass drivers versus the 2R's single 8.5" driver, with 35Hz bass extension compared to the 2R's 28Hz. The ELYSIAN 4R is the flagship floorstander using dual 8.5" bass drivers and a larger 402mm-wide cabinet for greater bass weight, deeper 24Hz extension, higher 92dB sensitivity, and 110dB peak SPL in larger rooms. The 3R occupies the middle ground between standmount convenience and full-scale floorstander performance.

Why does the ELYSIAN 3R use two 7" bass drivers rather than one larger driver?

Wharfedale uses dual 7" bass drivers in the ELYSIAN 3R to achieve floorstander-class combined cone area while maintaining the slim 263mm cabinet width that makes the 3R practical for modern listening rooms. A single driver providing equivalent cone area would require a cabinet too wide for the slim ELYSIAN 3R profile. The dual 7" configuration also allows each driver to operate in its own separate bass reflex chamber — 9.4 litres and 35 litres respectively — for optimised individual tuning across the full low-frequency range.

What does the 2.3 ohm minimum impedance mean for amplifier selection?

The ELYSIAN 3R's 2.3 ohm minimum impedance means that at specific frequencies the speaker presents a very low electrical load to the connected amplifier. Amplifiers not rated for low-impedance operation may engage protection circuits or compress output at these frequencies. All Accuphase, Hegel, NAD Masters Series, and Parasound Halo power amplifiers available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto are rated for 4 ohm and below loads and are fully compatible with the ELYSIAN 3R. Vinyl Sound's audio specialists can confirm amplifier compatibility for your specific pairing.

Does the ELYSIAN 3R require dedicated speaker stands?

No. The ELYSIAN 3R is a self-supporting floorstanding loudspeaker that stands directly on its supplied plinth with spike and spike shoe system. Unlike the ELYSIAN 1R and 2R standmounts which require dedicated stands, the ELYSIAN 3R is placed directly on the floor, making it particularly practical for rooms where stands would occupy additional floor space or where a self-contained floorstander is preferred over a standmount-plus-stand combination.

A fascinating read
Format: Kindle
I found Modern Africa to be a fascinating read, because, having grown up in the 80’s, places such as Libya and Ethiopia were always in the news, but I didn’t understand their backstories. Modern Africa does a great job of laying out these stories, but in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the reader. I look forward to reading more from the author! They do a great job of making history relevant and make me want to learn more!

Quick Read - Highlights Version
Format: Kindle
The author does a decent job of overviewing what took place during this time period. You will learn how many different events connect and see what caused various developments in Africa to take place. However, it was not as in depth as I would have liked and certainly could not cover everything that transpired during this time. Probably a decent survey book for high school students, but as an adult, I would have liked to see more elaboration and depth for each segment. 124 pages is a relatively short amount of space to cover so many topics. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Modern Africa is a land of mystery and intrigue
Format: Kindle
African history has truly as many facets as the multifaceted diamond. There are 54 countries in Africa but there are many more cultures. I found this book to be extremely interesting and it covered Africa from many sides. The book started by exploring the question of slavery in Africa. The history of slavery began long before the Europeans started transporting slaves to Europe and their colonies. The African tribes treated their slaves better than they were treated by the Europeans. The Europeans felt that the Africans were inferior and that it was their duty to colonize and Europeanize the African societies. They divided the continent of Africa among the major powers of Europe. Because of the colonization of Africa when Europe went to war they expected to draw manpower from their colonial possessions for the military. With this the colonial citizens were responsible for providing soldiers both in the European and the African theaters in the world wars. Africa has aiso been the theater of many civil Wars and also ethnic cleansings. This book also tells about some of the main revolutionaries and dictators that have led the countries of Africa. It is also a guide to the history of the relations of the United States with your African peoples. It will help you understand why some of the people mistrust the motives of the United States government when they interact with the different governments of Africa. African religions have always been interesting to me and this book shares some of those African religions and also the history of the Christian and Islamic religious pushing to Africa. It also has a chapter dealing with Africa and their politics in the theater of World affairs. This is a book I would love to have had while I was teaching world history. It has been researched and gives a greater understanding to what is going on in Africa and the history. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in world affairs. It is a great addition to any one who is interested both in world history and in the history of Africa.
