The basis of the Reichsarbeitsdienst, (National Labor Service), dates back, at least, to 1929 with the formation of the AAD, Anhalt Arbeitsdienst, (Anhalt Labor Service), and the FAD-B, Freiwillingen Arbeitsdienst-Bayern, (Volunteer Labor Service Bavaria). Shortly after Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor, (January 30TH 1933), the NSDAP consolidated these, and other labor organizations into the NSAD, Nationalsozialist Arbeitsdienst, (National Socialist Labor Service), under the control of Reichsarbeitsführer Konstatin Hierl. On June 26TH 1935 the NSAD was re-designated RAD. In July 1935 RAD service became compulsory, with all German citizens between 19 and 25 years of age required to enlist for a six month term. Of Note: This law also decreed that all military conscripts serve a nine month term. Besides specific RAD awards all RAD personnel were eligible for all national awards if they met the required criteria. All RAD personnel were given a commemorative enamel lapel pin, on the completion of their compulsory service.  The 16mm x 22mm vertical oval pin has a pebbled red surround, with gilt edging inside and out, and, to its central white field, the RAD emblem of an upright, pointed spade head with a mobile swastika to its center and dual sheaves of wheat projecting diagonally upwards from its base. The emblem is in black, with its swastika and articulations in gilt. To the reverse is a 50mm long rifled pin and, embossed beneath its soldered base.
