About the Workshop:

This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Deborah Phillips Chodoff.

This workshop explores the process of conceiving and executing a unique book work. We will move through play, experimentation, and collecting as we identify a central theme or concept. The shape, size, and mechanism best suited to the concept will naturally follow. Next comes refining and problem-solving as the work moves from concept through construction. Non-traditional binding solutions are encouraged; the book may include found objects, text, photographs, fabrics, papers, and/or natural objects. By the end of this workshop, participants will have gone through the process of creating a unique artist book, a playful, absorbing, and rich experience that will continue to nourish future endeavors.

Examples of the instructor’s work, as well as books from the CBA collection, will furnish a wide variety of examples. Participants should dress for mess; in the first class we will be creating our own decorative papers, and subsequently collaging and possibly using paint and ink for text and finishing.

Required Materials:

  • Sketchbook, spiral bound preferred, any size
  • Favorite art-making supplies such as colored pencils, markers, watercolor sets, graphite, etc. as desired; avoid charcoal and pastels (too smudgy for books)

Optional Materials:

  • needle-nosed pliers (if you have them)

  • Various types of string and thin rope
  • Assortment of hardware

A more detailed materials list will be sent to you upon registration. All other materials will be provided by the Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.

About the Instructor

Deborah Phillips Chodoff studied printmaking at Atelier 17 in Paris, France, with Stanley William Hayter and Krishna Reddy. After returning to New York City, she worked as a printmaker and painter; she started making unique artists’ books in the early 1980’s. Through early shows at Franklin Furnace and the Ted Cronin Gallery she met many of her book arts friends and colleagues. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally and is in numerous collections, including  the Fine Art Collection at The Center for Book Arts in NYC, the MoMA library, libraries at Harvard, Yale, the University of Alberta, and Florida Atlantic University, and Hillary Clinton’s archive collection.

Chodoff’s experience as a printmaker, painter, a digital/analog collage artist, photographer, and teacher allows her to use a rich variety of materials and methods to realize her books. Found objects, manipulated papers, and minimal texts inform the concepts and dictate the structures of her often sculptural works. She uses traditional and ad hoc binding techniques, producing either one-of-a kind artist books, or a series of unique variants. Her body of work also includes painting, digital collage, and video.

Lovely purse.
Color: Leopard, Color: Leopard
I was so pleased when I received this purse! It also has a Gold shoulder chain inside. I had previously ordered some shoes of this print. It was a perfect match! If you wear leopard prints, you understand. That was just lucky! AND I found a corsage! All from Amazon.

Pleasantly surprised - much better than price would indicate
Color: Nude
Needed a nude clutch to go with a deep aubergine dress i am planning to wear to a wedding. I did not want to spend too much as I'll only use it 1-2 times a year. I am pleased with the look and heft of the bag, and especially the chain; thank God there's a chain. This purse does not look cheap in any way. It will fit my phone, tissues, lipstick, change purse, and credit card/license. Other clutches were too small or too big, but this hits the sweet spot. I ordered additional colors (navy and black). Also - because its a flap closure, there is no clasp that could break or look chinsy

Stylish & Functional
Size: 70" x 48", Style: Starter Wall
The Stand Up Desk Store Expanse Modular Wall is a fantastic addition to my workspace. The frosted acrylic panels provide privacy without blocking light, and the sound-absorbent panels really help reduce noise. It’s easy to assemble, looks great with the sleek silver frame, and the modular design makes it super versatile. Great quality and value—highly recommended!

Does the job
Size: 53" x 48", Style: Starter Wall
Decent look, basic unit. Wasn’t the easiest build, I had to trim panels to get a good fit. Great price, but quality matches that point.
