Mamoiada is a small village in the Nuora province that is one of the great terroirs of Sardinia. The pride of Mamoiada is the red grape variety called Cannonau, a synonym for Grenache. The majority of wines produced in Mamoiada are made from old-vine Cannonau. A small amount of white wine is also produced in the granitic soils of the region, from an indigenous variety called Grantaza.
Brothers Giorgio and Piercarlo Gaia farm 5 hectares of vineyards, all between the altitudes of 650 to 850 meters. They farm organically and work with naturally low-yielding vines. In total they produce five wines, one white, and four reds. Each of their vineyards produces grapes that show their specific terroir. Because of this, three of the Vinzas Artas wines are from single vineyards, offering a fascinating study of the Mamoiada terroir.
In Mamoiada, a ghirada is the term given to a single parcel. For Vinzas Artas, there are two important ghirada, Sa Lahana and Garaunele. The first is the highest-altitude parcel where they grow Cannonau, at 750 meters above sea level. It is a south-facing parcel, with very old vines.
This vineyard produces a very high-toned style of Cannonau. The aromas showcase notes of sour cherry, rhubarb, and wild strawberry, alongside savory spice. Make no mistake, this is a full-bodied wine, but the palate is so well balanced that it feels almost Burgundian in its style.
Just 944 bottles produced.
