In the Langhe region, south of the Tanaro River, is the enchanting Poderi Colla winery. The family property lies on famed Marne di Sant’Agata soil, composed of clay and limestone rich in fossils, known for producing grapes of substantial elegance.
Although the family can trace its winemaking lineage back to the 1700s, the winery as we know it began in the 1990s with Beppe Colla. He was instrumental in helping to create the wine regulations in the Alba region, as well as being a pioneer of single-vineyard wines there. Poderi Colla has flourished under the current generation, Federica and Pietro. Federica Colla took over the family business after obtaining her Master’s Degree in Wine Marketing, while winemaker Pietro carries on the tradition of “less is more” in the vineyard and winery. He earned his enology degree in 2006 and has been working the vines with patience and dedication, in accordance with his uncle Beppe’s teachings.
It is quite rare to see an entire vineyard dedicated to Dolcetto, as it is more often spread throughout less favorable areas of a vineyard. The Colla family, however, has entirely devoted the “Pian Balbo” vineyard, planted in 1970, to Dolcetto. The wine was harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel, preserving its robust and bright fruity character. It is, in fact, the only wine in the Poderi Colla portfolio to undergo no oak treatment. Notes of cherry, plum, allspice, and violets mingle with supple tannins to create an approachable and joyous glass of red wine. Open this bottle any time you have ripe summer tomatoes on the table.
