What is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat infections caused by bacteria. It belongs to a group of medicines known as tetracyclines, which work by preventing bacteria from producing proteins they need to grow. While doxycycline is commonly used for various conditions like bacterial pneumonia, acne, chlamydia, Lyme disease, cholera, typhus, and syphilis, we'll concentrate on how it helps with folliculitis and hidradenitis suppurativa.
Folliculitis is a condition where your hair follicles get inflamed, often due to a bacterial infection. This can lead to the formation of pustules or papules, which might be painful or uncomfortable. While treatment isn't always needed, if bacterial folliculitis is ignored, it could develop into a more serious infection.
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory skin condition that often appears in areas such as the armpits, groin, bottom, and breasts. While it's not directly caused by bacteria, they can worsen the condition, and secondary infections might happen if a lump or sore bursts, spreading its contents to nearby skin. This can trigger an immune response, leading to an abscess. Treating abscesses is crucial to stop them from spreading to other parts of the body. Oral tetracyclines are commonly used in HS because of their anti-inflammatory effects.
How does Doxycycline work?
Doxycycline contains the active ingredient doxycycline hyclate, which is an antibiotic. It works by binding to the protein unit in bacteria, preventing them from making proteins. Without these proteins, the bacteria can't grow and will eventually die.
What doses of Doxycycline are there?
Doxycycline is available in a 100mg capsule. Typically, you'll take 100mg either once or twice daily. How long you'll need to take it will depend on your specific condition and how severe it is.
How long does Doxycycline take to work?
The time it takes for Doxycycline to start working varies based on what it's being used to treat. If you're taking it for folliculitis, you might be prescribed Doxycycline for anywhere between 5 and 30 days. On the other hand, treating hidradenitis suppurativa may require more than 10 weeks of antibiotics to see an improvement in symptoms. Regardless of the condition, it's important to complete the full course of treatment, even if you start feeling better, as stopping early can lead to the symptoms coming back.
Can I drink alcohol with Doxycycline?
It's best to avoid drinking alcohol while you're taking doxycycline, as it can reduce how well the medicine works. This can make it more difficult to fight the bacterial infection and might extend the duration of your treatment. So, it's wise to wait until you've finished your course of treatment before having a drink.
Can I take Doxycycline when pregnant?
No, you shouldn't take Doxycycline if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. It can impact tooth development and lead to discolouration of teeth in babies and children.
How to avoid an upset stomach when taking Doxycycline?
Doxycycline might cause an upset stomach. To help prevent this, try to eat less spicy food while you're taking the medication.
Having it with milk or a bit of food might help lower the risk of an upset stomach.
How does Doxycycline compare with other treatments?
There are various antibiotics that can be used to treat folliculitis and hidradenitis suppurativa. These antibiotics help by either killing bacteria or preventing them from growing. Some, such as doxycycline, are also used for their anti-inflammatory effects, even if there's no infection. Since they have different active ingredients, if one antibiotic isn't effective for you, another might be. Your clinician will work with you to find the most suitable treatment based on your health needs and symptoms.
