The field of music education research is often concerned with studies and measurements that highlight the deficits rather than inquire about the developmental and dispositional strengths exhibited in children's musical behaviors. Before We Teach Music puts forth an alternative view, examining childhood as a site where enculturation mixes with individual experience to create foundational ways of being musical. Through interdisciplinary scholarship and multiple sources of data, author Lori A. Custodero reveals how our capacities to live musically and to cultivate a musical life are derived from the legacies of childhood.

The book features excerpted musical autobiographies from over 200 music education graduate students that reveal the full spectrum of music's effect on developmental stages. For example, early childhood memories evoke strong associations with family members; dispositional practices and expressions of musical identities surface in middle childhood; and strong memories of disruption, renewal, and resistance tend to occur in later adolescence and early adulthood. These stories generate the reader's own recollections and provoke a process of self-reflection on how the past informs the present, and how our current actions help shape future experiences. Moreover, Before We Teach Music addresses what parents, teachers, performers, and composers learn from their encounters with children, raising important questions about the nature of musicality, the roles of music in identity, and the complexity of human musical trajectories.

A Comprehensive Pocket Guide to Christian Living
Format: Paperback
Looking for a book on discipleship? Not sure what discipleship is, or how it relates to Christian living? Want to learn more about how God grows us and wants us to grow? May I recommend Mapping Discipleship, a 2025 release from Faith Publications by Charlie Carter, co-host of The Thinklings Podcast (my favorite podcast). I pre-ordered my copy and read it shortly after its (early 👏) arrival. I ended up using it as my devotions, taking extra time to read the suggested passages and think through the reflection questions. Some pros of this book are -its small, short size: the chapters themselves are short, making the book more of a "pocket guide" than an intimidating, extensive treatise. -its catechism style: each chapter's title is a question that the chapter itself answers with Scripture, personal examples, illustrations and analogies, and practical application. Each chapter builds on the next, so start at the beginning. -its organization: the division of chapters into 3 parts (recognition, renewal, and results -- not exact) makes for a logical progression easy to follow and to implement. -its depth: though small, Mapping Discipleship packs a big punch in the way it lays out and digs into foundational truths of Christian living and how we grow. Deep thoughts and rich language. Chew slowly. Mapping Discipleship's only con (for me) is also its pro: its length. A few places I would have loved more fleshed-out discussion and maybe some additional resources. I'd love to share some of the quotes that impacted me, but I already lent my copy out to a friend. 😅 Just get your own copy -- you will be challenged and blessed!

A Genuinely Good Guy & A Genuinely Fun Read
Format: Hardcover
A prison diary with optimism, realism and humor. You can read this book in its daily snippets, but you won't want to put it down as the daily drama unfolds. Each story leads up to the next in a riveting account of gritty survival. Peter is a man I genuinely would like to meet some day. Every once in awhile we get blessed with a public servant who has a heart of gold. Someone who doesn't just look after their own selfish interests, but cares about the affairs of others. Peter proves to be that man. Injected into a jail system with malice as a political prisoner, we find Peter busy helping others. When life gave him lemons, Peter chose to make lemonade for others. He discovered everything that seemed hopelessly mucked up in the prison system. So Peter, the ever-observant statistician, dug deep into the root causes of the massive dysfunction. He then began detangling each individual man's predicament with precision. And love. He genuinely cared about the prisoners and their families, their lives and their future. And when he left, he continued to work to change things for the better. That is honorable and commendable.

Well written
Format: Kindle
Navarro writes "postcard" style short chapters. Easy to read with a dash of humor in each. His prose flows well. I was captured by his efforts to improve his situation along with fellow inmates. Quite enjoyable.
