What is Differin?
Acne is a skin condition that occurs when pores become blocked by hair, sebum (an oily substance), bacteria, and dead skin cells. It's more common in people aged 11 to 30, but it can affect anyone.
Differin is an acne treatment available as either a gel or a cream. It's suitable for treating mild to moderate acne on the face, chest, and back. Differin can help with spots, rashes, blackheads, and pimples, whether they have pus or not.
Apply Differin to the affected skin area at night before going to bed. Be careful to avoid your eyes and lips.
It isn't used for treating severe acne.
How does Differin work?
Adapalene is the main ingredient in Differin. Each gram of Differin has 1mg of adapalene. It's a type of retinoid, meaning it acts similarly to Vitamin A in the body, but it's specially made to treat acne.
Acne usually happens when new skin cells are created faster than the old ones are shed. This can cause a build-up of old cells, along with sebum and bacteria, leading to blocked pores. Adapalene helps by encouraging cell turnover and keeping pores clear. This allows new skin cells to develop, helps sebaceous cells release extra sebum, and prevents spots from appearing. Adapalene also has an anti-inflammatory effect, which reduces soreness and irritation in the affected area.
Differin acts just on the skin's surface because only tiny amounts are absorbed.
What forms of Differin are there?
Differin comes in two types: gel and cream. Both contain the active ingredient adapalene, with each gram of the gel and cream having 1mg of adapalene. This means they both provide the same dosage.
You can choose between gel or cream based on your skin type. For oily skin, gel is a better option because it dries quickly. If your skin is sensitive, cream might be more suitable as it's gentler and less likely to irritate.
How long does it take Differin to work?
The time it takes for Differin to work can differ for each individual, depending on their skin type and how severe their acne is. Some people might notice a change in two weeks, but it could take between eight to twelve weeks to experience the full benefits of Differin.
If you've been using Differin for three months straight, it's a good idea to see your doctor to ensure it's working well for you.
What should I do if I make a mistake when using Differin?
If you forget to apply Differin at the right time, there's no need to worry. It shouldn't impact its long-term effectiveness. Simply apply the usual amount as soon as you remember. Avoid using extra Differin to make up for the missed dose, as using too much won't speed up acne healing and might irritate your skin.
Always follow your doctor's instructions when using the treatment.
How is Differin different to other treatments for acne?
Differin doesn't have an antibiotic like some other treatments, such as Treclin. Instead, its active ingredient, adapalene, works similarly to vitamin A in your body. If you have mild-to-moderate acne, Differin can be a good option. It's also occasionally used 'off-label' for other skin issues like keratosis pilaris, which causes rough, dry patches and bumps on the skin.
Many clinical studies have demonstrated that adapalene is an excellent option for treating acne, as it is effective and generally well-tolerated, meaning it usually doesn't cause many side effects.
Is Differin similar to any other treatments?
Differin is the only acne treatment that contains adapalene as its only active ingredient. This means there are no other treatments that work in exactly the same way.
Adapalene is a treatment called a topical retinoid. Retinoids help prevent acne from developing beneath the skin's surface. Some acne treatments, such as Treclin, combine a retinoid with an antibiotic. You can find various other acne treatments in either cream or gel form, but few are offered in both.
Which version of Differin should I use?
It's really your choice. Some people like the cream, while others find the gel works better for them. If you're having trouble deciding, have a chat with our clinicians—they can help guide you. Generally, if you have oily skin, the gel is usually recommended, and if your skin is more sensitive, the cream might be the better option.
Do I need a prescription for Differin?
Differin isn't something you can buy over the counter; it's only available with a prescription. If you're interested in getting Differin from us, have a chat with us about your health. Our clinician can prescribe Differin for you if they determine it's safe and appropriate for your needs.
