About the Workshop:

In this class we will delve into the intertwined worlds of book production and printmaking in the early modern period. Sub-divided into four two-hour units, you will learn to recognize and appreciate the intrinsic qualities, advantages and disadvantages of producing images in the then common relief and intaglio printmaking processes. We will then examine in depth the unexpectedly complex process by which a text was printed by hand. You will be astounded by what a diverse assortment of learned scholars, skilled artisans, and ordinary laborers were able to achieve when their activities were coordinated by a savvy publisher. Finally, we will consider how these processes were combined and to what end when texts were embellished visually. Important considerations here include: What function did decorative elements and illustrations serve? What did the visual embellishment of a text entail in terms of costs and the time-to-completion of the project? And, what did a publisher’s decisions concerning the illustration of a book say about his/her intended audience?

About the Instructor:

Karen Bowen is an art historian specialized in the study of printmaking, the production and illustration of books in the hand-press period, and the trade in prints and books in the early modern period. She routinely combines historical and archival research with a close examination of rare books and prints in order to better understand the historical record and how that is reflected in the objects we see before us.

Her publications address such topics as artists’ workshop practices, printmaking techniques and book illustration, collectors of prints and books, and the distribution networks and markets for illustrated books and prints in the early modern period.

Most recently she has taught courses for both Williams College and the graduate program in Library and Information Science at Long Island University.

Fantastic plates!
Size: Extra Large (Pack of 1)
These plates were huge--perfect for the Thanksgiving feast. The plates were sturdy and held up to the weight of the food. Even others in attendance commented on how good the plates were and that they were big enough to hold larger portions which meant people didn't have to go back for seconds. The thickness of the plates was good--gravy didn't leak through. I plan to buy them again for future large holiday meals.

Great plates for the holidays and family gatherings!
Size: Extra Large (Pack of 1), Size: Extra Large (Pack of 1)
These plates are sturdy and designed to hold even the heaviest of meals without bending or folding, which is a huge plus when you're serving barbecue or pasta dishes. One of the standout features is their size; they’re large enough to accommodate generous portions, making them perfect for parties or picnics. I also appreciated the attractive design, which adds a nice touch to the table setting. Cleanup was a breeze, as they are disposable and save me from the hassle of washing up after the event. Additionally, they don’t soak through easily, so I didn’t have to worry about any leaks or messes, even with saucy foods. Overall, I highly recommend Dixie Ultra Large Paper Plates for anyone looking for a reliable and stylish disposable plate option. They combine functionality with aesthetic appeal, making them a perfect choice for any occasion!

Sturdy and Reliable Plates for Any Occasion!
Size: Extra Large (Pack of 1)
The Dixie Ultra Large Paper Plates are truly impressive in quality and design. They feel incredibly sturdy, living up to the promise of being 3X stronger than standard paper plates. I love the 11-inch size — it’s perfect for big, heavy, and messy meals without worrying about leaks or spills. The soak-proof coating and microwave-safe feature make them super convenient. The design is also bright and festive without being too flashy. These plates are now a must-have in my kitchen for family dinners and parties!

Strong Enough for BBQ Ribs, Pasta & Everything in Between!
Size: Extra Large (Pack of 1)
These Dixie Ultra paper plates are truly the heavyweight champs of disposable dinnerware. I grabbed them for a backyard BBQ, expecting the usual paper plate struggle—but these held up like actual dinner plates. We piled on ribs, baked beans, coleslaw, and even mac & cheese, and not a single plate buckled, soaked through, or leaked. At 11 inches, they’re large enough for full meals (and seconds!), and the cut-resistant coating means no forks poking through. They're also microwave-safe, which is great for leftovers. Whether it's dinner with kids, hosting guests, or avoiding dishes during busy weeks—these are now my go-to. Totally worth it!
