Sky African Cichlid Flakes deliver the protein plant balance, color enhancing carotenoids, and species appropriate formula that Rift Lake cichlids need, in a flake format that disperses across the water surface and mid water creating multiple simultaneous feeding points that reduce the competition driven aggression that makes cichlid feeding time chaotic.

Sky African Cichlid Flakes — 800ml

The same specialist African cichlid nutrition — in a flake format. Sky African Cichlid Flakes deliver the protein-plant balance, color-enhancing carotenoids, and species-appropriate formula that Rift Lake cichlids need, in a flake format that disperses across the water surface and mid-water — creating multiple simultaneous feeding points that reduce the competition-driven aggression that makes cichlid feeding time chaotic. Egyptian-made, plant-protein balanced, and carotenoid-enriched for the vivid blues, yellows, reds, and oranges that African cichlids are famous for. Available in a generous 800ml container for the serious cichlid keeper who feeds daily and wants consistent color and health results. Specialist nutrition, in the format that works for your tank.

Why Sky African Cichlid Flakes Is The Best Choice

  • Formulated Specifically for African Cichlids — Species-appropriate nutritional profile with the protein-plant balance that Rift Lake cichlids need — not a general fish food with a cichlid label.
  • Color Enhancement — Carotenoid-enriched formula that intensifies the vivid blues, yellows, reds, and oranges that African cichlids are famous for.
  • Correct Protein-to-Plant Balance — Balances animal protein with vegetable matter to match the natural diet of mbuna, haps, peacocks, and Tanganyikan species — and to protect mbuna and Tropheus from Malawi bloat.
  • Flake Format — Reduces Feeding Aggression — Flakes disperse across the water surface and mid-water, creating multiple simultaneous feeding points that reduce competition-driven aggression at feeding time.
  • 800ml Generous Volume — Large container for consistent daily feeding — the volume that delivers visible color results through sustained carotenoid input.
  • Egyptian Brand — Locally produced by Sky — reliable supply and fast availability.
  • Rotate with Cichlid Sticks — Pair with Sky African Cichlid Sticks for dietary variety and different feeding experiences.

Product Details & Features

Why African Cichlids Need Specialist Food African cichlids from Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Victoria have evolved dietary requirements that differ significantly from most aquarium fish:

Mbuna & Tropheus (herbivores/omnivores): These species graze on algae (aufwuchs) in the wild and have digestive systems adapted for plant matter. High-protein, animal-based diets can cause Malawi bloat — a potentially fatal digestive disorder. The African Cichlid Flakes formula includes sufficient plant matter to support mbuna and Tropheus digestive health while providing adequate protein for their active lifestyle.

Haps & Peacocks (omnivores): More protein-tolerant than mbuna, but still benefit from the plant matter and carotenoid content of a cichlid-specific formula for optimal color and health.

Tanganyikan species: Tropheus, Frontosa, Julidochromis, and Neolamprologus each have specific dietary requirements — the balanced formula supports the full range of Tanganyikan species.

Flake Format — The Aggression Advantage African cichlids are territorial and aggressive — particularly at feeding time, when competition for food amplifies territorial behavior and increases injury risk. The flake format's key advantage in a cichlid tank is dispersion:

When flakes are dropped into a cichlid tank, they spread across the entire water surface and mid-water column — creating dozens of simultaneous feeding points rather than a single concentrated food source. This means:

  • Dominant fish cannot monopolize the food — They can only be in one place at a time, and flakes are everywhere.
  • Subordinate fish get adequate nutrition — Access to food is not determined solely by dominance hierarchy.
  • Feeding aggression is reduced — With food available across the entire tank surface, the resource-competition component of cichlid aggression is significantly diminished.
  • Every fish feeds simultaneously — More efficient feeding with less chasing, less stress, and less injury risk.

This is the single most important practical advantage of flakes over sticks in a multi-cichlid tank — and it's why many experienced cichlid keepers prefer flakes for daily feeding.

Color Enhancement — Sustained Carotenoid Input African cichlids' vivid colors are produced by carotenoid pigments that must be obtained through food. The Sky African Cichlid Flakes formula is enriched with carotenoids (including astaxanthin) that support full color expression. Consistent daily feeding produces visible color improvement within 2–4 weeks, with maximum color expression developing over 6–8 weeks of sustained carotenoid input.

Flakes vs. Sticks — Choosing the Right Format

Format Feeding Pattern Best For
Flakes Disperses across surface and mid-water Multi-cichlid tanks, reducing feeding aggression, daily feeding variety
Sticks Floats at surface, concentrated feeding point Targeted feeding, single-species tanks, structured feeding sessions

Many experienced cichlid keepers rotate between both formats — flakes for daily feeding to minimize aggression, sticks for supplementary feeding or targeted nutrition for specific fish.

Compatible Species

Lake Malawi: Pseudotropheus, Melanochromis, Labidochromis, Maylandia, Cynotilapia (mbuna); Aulonocara (peacocks); Copadichromis, Sciaenochromis (haps)

Lake Tanganyika: Tropheus, Cyphotilapia (Frontosa), Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, Altolamprologus

Lake Victoria: Haplochromis, Pundamilia, Mbipia species

Feeding Guidelines

Tank Size / Cichlid Population Feeding Amount Frequency
Small tank, 3–6 cichlids Small pinch Once or twice daily
Medium tank, 6–12 cichlids Moderate pinch Once or twice daily
Large tank, 12+ cichlids Generous pinch Twice daily

Feed only what cichlids can consume within 3–5 minutes. Remove any uneaten flakes after feeding. For mbuna and Tropheus, feed smaller amounts more frequently rather than large amounts less often.

Feeding Tips

  • Spread flakes across the full tank width — Drop flakes along the entire length of the tank surface rather than in one spot — maximize the dispersion advantage to minimize feeding aggression.
  • Feed twice daily in smaller amounts — Two smaller feedings reduce aggression at feeding time and support better digestion than one large daily feeding.
  • Watch for bloat in mbuna and Tropheus — Persistent abdominal swelling is a warning sign of Malawi bloat. Reduce feeding immediately and consult an aquarium specialist.
  • Don't overfeed — Cichlid tanks have high bioloads. Overfeeding rapidly degrades water quality and suppresses immune function and color expression.
  • Rotate with Sky African Cichlid Sticks — Alternating between flakes and sticks provides dietary variety and different feeding experiences.
  • Store correctly — Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain carotenoid potency and nutritional integrity.

Signs of Good Cichlid Nutrition

  • Vivid, saturated color with no fading
  • Active, alert behavior and strong feeding response
  • Healthy body weight — rounded but not bloated
  • Reduced food-competition aggression at feeding time

Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking
Color: Green/Black
I love this watch despite the fact that it is really a toy. I love the look of the watch, I love how lite the weight of the watch is on my wrist, and it really does keep good time if you manage the solar charge properly. Other than looking cool on your wrist, this watch has absolutely no functions other than time keeping. The black plastic bezel is molded into the case and does not turn, so don't plan on using that. The watch has no light, the dial numbers are non-luminous and the hands are very limited in terms of luminosity. No buttons. All you can do is adjust the time and date by pulling out what used to be a winding stem in the good old days. The small tag on the strap with Geographic coordinates shown on it indicate the location of the old Timex manufacturing facility (SW of Waterbury, CT). I have a nice ledge at my bedroom window and it gets good western sun for a good part of the day regardless of the time of year. On this ledge you will find a half dozen solar powered watches (mostly Casio) properly aligned to maximize the charge they may receive each day. Note that the description for this Timex watch specifically states that a lightbulb won't charge this watch. You need direct sunlight for several hours if you want to get more than a 3-week charge into this watch. So, I'll leave you with a couple of tips, my friends; 1.) If you are looking for a first watch to give your outdoorsy oriented Son or Daughter, then give them this one. Why? Because it is cool looking, fairly well built, and it actually works, 2.) After you receive your Timex watch, be sure to keep the display mount it is packaged with. It makes a great fixture to mount your watch on for charging and allows you to maximize the position of the solar cells on the dial so that you can optimize charging time. Have Fun! Jimmy

Excellent value, flawless performance for well over a year and no signs of quitting.
Color: Green/Black
Excellent value, had this for well over a year and it still keeps perfect time, still water resistant. No worries about having to change batteries. Owned a fancy expensive (battery) watch once and the dept. store repair intentionally sabotaged the watch in the hopes I would purchase another from them. Yeah, good luck with that, lost my business forever. This is the 21st century, cell phones are the new time pieces, but solar is totally reliable and Timex makes it happen. Holds a charge for many months, although I prop it in a bright window for a few days every few months or so just to make sure the cells are always fully charged, although it's probably unnecessary, just being over cautious. I haven't actually experienced this watch ever running out of power even after months of use. Damn impressive, as it should be.

Good value for solar watch
Color: Black/Orange
Nice watch! It is plastic like but it is solar. No indiglo button only a little luminous on the hands so you don't want to wear it in tje dark and expect to check the time. 45mm case is good size for my wrist and the band works good also, Not too long not too short. Overall a good watch with no problems

Do not buy
Color: Green/Black
Do not buy. When I received the watch it did not work and the battery was dead. I bought a new battery and it killed that one as well after about a month.
