"Superbly complex and enticing with dark berry, hazelnut, tar, toasted spice and rich floral aromas, it's concentrated and fleshy in the mouth delivering excellent weight and flow. Silky-smooth and multi-layered with loads of delectable flavours" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jun 2023

"Intense pinot noir with cassis, blackberry, black cherry, spicy oak, dark chocolate and ripe plum flavours. Bold wine with appealing purity and nicely layered flavours that linger long after the wine has been swallowed. Accessible now but should age well" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Jul 2023

"Distinctive bouquet of ripe black cherry and barrel spices, dark plum and wood smoke, there’s a gun flint and savoury mineral quality and a core of ripeness and pinosity. Youthful, powerful, enticing. Delicious on the palate with a flinty ripe fruited core, dark cherry and black currant, a light dried herb quality, baked nut and wood smoke. Textures from tannins deliver a chalky fine quality, acidity some crunch and back bone. A quality wine from start to finish with best drinking from late 2024 through 2034" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Jul 2023"

"This is one of North Canterbury's greatest Pinot Noirs, typically very rich in body and flavour. Many of the vines are over 25 years old and the wine is matured for 15 months in French oak barriques (about 40 per cent new). Still very youthful, the 2021 vintage is deep ruby, with a perfumed bouquet. Mouthfilling and supple, it has deep, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing excellent complexity and richness, and a long, savoury, finely textured finish. A very graceful red" Michael Cooper, Sep 2023

"Pegasus Bay winemakers consistently make powerful Pinot Noir from North Canterbury, expressing the region's dry long autumns in wines of structure, with impressive body and, while this is unmistakably Pinot Noir with its red fruit flavours, it has dense, bold spicy aromas that add tasty complexity and length to every sip. Drinks well now but will be better in six or seven years and then some"Joelle Thomson, Dec 2023

"Darker, more exotic and more plummy than the Escarpment duo, this is a silky, hedonistic Pinot, and it encapsulates all that is great about this terrific estate. It is more forward than one might expect at only two years of age, and yet the tannins will keep it upright for 5-8 years, I imagine" Matthew Jukes, Nov 2023

Its colour is a deep ruby upon release. Dark toned and seductive, the nose unfurls with an alluring bouquet of boysenberry, black cherry, and cacao, underpinned with a savoury underlay, reminiscent of wood spice, roast game, truffle, leather, and a tickle of cinnamon. The palate is decadently ripe and supple bodied, with fine grained tannins and generous fruit weight that combine to beautifully harmonise the wine. A backbone of zippy acidity creates the perfect union, adding structure and length on the long, succulent close.

The vineyard is located within the Waipara Valley of North Canterbury, on free draining, north facing terraces. It benefits from being in the lee of the Teviotdale Range, giving maximum protection from the Pacific’s easterly breezes and thus creating a unique mesoclimate. The vines are over 30 years old, with a large proportion planted on their own roots. They are located on the “Glasnevin Gravels” where greywacke stones, silt and loam have been washed down from the mountains over the millennia. The soil is of low fertility, resulting in naturally reduced vine vigour. This produces low yields of optimally ripened, high quality, flavourful grapes, which fully express the qualities of this unique terroir. The vineyard has warm days, but the nights are amongst the coolest in the Waipara Valley, drawing out the ripening period of the grapes, while still retaining good natural acidity.

Cold weather during bud burst resulted in lower crop levels, hence no further fruit thinning was carried out. The subsequent warm dry summer served up perfectly ripened small berries full of intense flavour and concentration. Favourable conditions continued into autumn, allowing the grapes to be picked at their optimum ripeness.

Traditional Burgundian winemaking methods were used to make this wine. We picked the various blocks at different stages, depending on their maturity, aiming for a range of red and dark fruit flavours. Approximately 40% the grapes were put at the bottom of the fermentation vats as whole bunches, with the balance being destemmed on top, retaining as many whole berries as possible. The vats were kept cool over the next few days to help extract the soft, silky tannins from the pinot noir skins. After approximately a week the must started to ferment naturally. During fermentation the skins of the grapes were gently plunged twice daily. When the fermentation finished, the grape remnants were left to steep in the wine for up to a week to help extract a different range of tannins that add structure and depth. The exact duration of this period was determined by daily tasting. Subsequently the wine was gently pressed off and put into oak barriques (40% new) from selected artisan Burgundian coopers. In the summer after harvest, when the weather warmed, the wine underwent a natural malo-lactic (secondary) fermentation. After maturing for 15mths in these barriques, the batches made from the many different plots and clones of pinot were carefully blended in varying portions to produce the most complex and balanced wine possible.

One of the best reading experiences I’ve ever had
Format: Audiobook
This was truly AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! In every possible way. - the setting. I loved the steampunk/gaslamp setting with trains, overcast weather, and mafia vibes - the magic. I still don’t entirely understand the magic system and descendants as much and it took awhile for me to get my footing in that department- and I am intrigued beyond measure, though it in no way lessened my enjoyment of the story. I just really wish I had a better grasp of it. - the plot itself. Beautiful. The tropes were troping in the absolute best way. Every single thing that happened I was like YES MORE!!! - the writing. I found myself grinning ear to ear uncontrollably during my entire read through and full on choking on my gasps, again, like the entire read through. And I read this too at times when I was in an awful mood so the way this book was an INSTANT pick me up really speaks to how well this was written. I was having the absolute best time, non stop. - the characters. The best part oh my gosh. Camilla is SUCH a badass. Her and Nico are supposed to be low 20s and I gotta tell you they read more like 30s from how capable and mature they are (not that that age bracket is incapable or immature, just comparing them to other characters written in that age range). She is the type of cool as heck character that everyone would be cos-playing as and if it was a kid movie, every single girl would dress as her for Halloween. She’s that awesome. Nico is top freaking tier. I gotta say his hairstyle is my undoing and with the addition of the metal arm- before I even started reading the book I was in love with him. And he was EVEN BETTER than my lofty expectations. This man. Perfect in every single way. Every. Single. Way. If I start now I won’t stop so I’m just gonna leave it at that. Camilla and Nico are power couple of the century though and the way they interacted was the most toe-curling/squealing/kicking your feet banter I’ve read in a while. PLUS the way they fell for each other was a gem. I was falling in love with their relationship right along with them. - a shout out to the side characters too. Aramis, Gideon, Aunt Fran, Esme, Luther, Adler [honestly just insert all the supporting cast they were freaking phenomenal] brought so much life and personality to the story and helped round out Nico and Camilla. I really really really would absolutely adore if Adler got some more spotlight time in the future because he and Aramis are up there with “let’s give these side characters their own spinoffs”. Also, the villains were great too. I love a great villain in a story and sometimes I don’t think they get highlighted as much in books as in movies or TV that I hear of. If it wasn’t obvious already- this was even greater than a 5 star read. This was perfection- in quality and in vibes- and it was one of the most enjoyable reading experiences I have ever had and I’m not throwing that around lightly. I have scenes from this book playing in my mind unbidden on repeat and I know this world has so much more to be explored. I will read anything Alexis L Menard puts out in the future

Great mix of maffia and magic
Format: Kindle
This one felt really unique to me, with a great and successful blend of Twenties-feeling maffia and inventive magic. I liked both the main characters a lot, even though I found myself almost shouting at the MFC sometimes. She really should learn not to trust everyone just because they're family! All in all a good read, with lots of romance, yearning and some spice as well.

So close to being good
I really wanted to like this book. It had all the makings of a strong, interesting story, but the plot got so convoluted that it was hard to follow. Also, for a "badass" FMC, Milla was amazingly inept. The writing got really stilted at times too. I will probably still read the next one anyway, because I'm curious to see where the plot goes.

FASCINATING world, great characters and swoony slow burn!
House of Bane and Blood by Alexis Menard -Order and Chaos Book 1- 4.5/5⭐️ 1/3🌶️* 2/3🦋 •My Thoughts• What a RIDE! This world was absolutely fascinating with its 1920s mafia vibes meets magic. The characters and enemies to lovers storyline hooked me from the beginning - add in a marriage of convenience and a dash of mystery and I ate👏🏻it👏🏻up👏🏻. Milla’s growth was so good and I was cheering for her as she became more confident! I also loved Niko and his back story and resilience. These are imperfect characters you find easy to love, root for and I became enamored with their slow but steadfast (if reluctant) support of each other. I did find the government structure a little confusing but didn’t want to slow down enough stop and figure it out (if anyone reads it an wants to make a chart, please share it with me). This book was violent but also mesmerizing and full of hope for a better future. I loved the big family dynamics and the never ending plot twists that kept me guessing. This is a completed duology and with that ending, you BET I’m immediately reading book 2. *I rated this a 1/3🌶️ because there were only a few scenes with on page intimacy. However, I would like to note that the spice involves kink: breath play.

Top tier romantasy
I really enjoyed this book! It's everything a romantasy should be, really. The interactions between the characters was good, the world was interesting, and I liked the magic system. Slow burn was a 10/10! I really love Nico. He's so intriguing and I hope we get more of his POV in the next book. Reasons for taking off a star: 1. I didn't think the world building was set up well. I got the full picture by the end, but the author writes as if we should already understand and it was a bit confusing for quite a while. 2. Milla's characterization was inconsistent. She was wishy washy with her goals and didn't give off the bad ass vibes I think the author was aiming for. I would have also liked more showing and not telling for her background. 3. (This is me being a bit ridiculous) I didn't know if I was supposed to pronounce it as "Mih-luh" or "Mee-luh." I think the former sounds silly but my brain didn't want to read it as the latter 😅
