Totem Bison Tower Floorstanding Loudspeaker at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Bison Tower is a 2-way ported floorstanding loudspeaker from Totem Acoustic (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. The mid-tier floorstanding model in Totem's Bison series, the Bison Tower is built around a proprietary 5.25" copper-clad voice coil woofer and a 1.3" laser-etched textile soft-dome tweeter, crossing over at 2.5kHz via a first-order handmade crossover in a lock-mitered monocoque Variable Density Fiberboard cabinet with exclusive Delrin Claw decoupling feet. With an 88dB sensitivity, an 8-ohm nominal impedance, and a frequency response from 30Hz to 30kHz ±3dB, the Bison Tower accepts amplifier power from 30 to 150 watts and works effectively with integrated amplifiers, valve amplifiers, and AV receivers. Standing 33.47 inches tall on a 6.89-inch wide footprint, it is sold as a pair in White Oak, Satin White, or Black Ash finishes with magnetic grilles and 4-way bi-wireable gold-plated terminals. Hi-Fi+ awarded the Bison Tower its Highly Commended distinction.

Variable Density Fiberboard and Lock-Miter Cabinet Engineering

The Bison Tower's cabinet is constructed from Variable Density Fiberboard, a material engineered with a density of approximately 90% at the cabinet's exterior sides and 65% toward the interior. This density gradient increases structural strength and shape stability at the outer surfaces where mechanical forces are greatest, while the less dense interior avoids the repetitive resonance nodes and underlying coloration that affect uniform-density MDF panels. The cabinet is assembled using lock-miter joinery, in which the cabinet edges physically interlock rather than simply being glued face-to-face as in conventional V-groove construction, producing a structure Totem states is up to five times stronger than standard speaker enclosures. Full internal cross-bracing runs horizontally through the cabinet for additional rigidity. The cabinet is completed without any internal damping material — designer Vince Bruzzese avoids stuffing the cabinets with poly fill or similar material, preferring to control resonances through the cabinet structure itself. The included handmade crossover is assembled point-to-point on insulated polymer with WBT silver solder rather than a printed circuit board, for maximum signal integrity and long-term component reliability.

1.3" Laser-Etched Tweeter, 5.25" Copper-Clad Woofer, and Delrin Claw Feet

The Bison Tower's 1.3" laser-etched textile soft-dome tweeter is larger than the 1" tweeters found in most speakers at this price point. Its larger voice coil provides higher power-handling capability and a lower resonant frequency, allowing it to contribute to midrange reproduction at its lower operating limit in a way that a 1" dome cannot. The tweeter is activated by a neodymium magnet system and is laser-etched for precision matching between units. It extends to 30kHz, providing a bandwidth considerably beyond the conventional audio range for improved time-domain behaviour within the audible spectrum. The 5.25" woofer uses a copper-clad voice coil that increases electrical conductivity relative to a conventional aluminium voice coil, reducing resistance and improving the motor system's authority over the cone at high excursion levels. At the base of each cabinet, Totem's Delrin Claw feet provide floor decoupling using three conically shaped Delrin polymer claw points that break standing waves between the cabinet and the floor surface. Delrin's material properties allow the claw tips to flex very slightly under load, providing controlled mechanical compliance that a rigid metal spike cannot offer. Thread inserts in the Claw feet accommodate optional spikes for carpet installations.

Key Features

  • 5.25" Copper-Clad Voice Coil Woofer: A proprietary woofer with a copper-clad voice coil for lower resistance and improved motor authority, extending bass to 30Hz in a compact ported floorstanding cabinet.
  • 1.3" Laser-Etched Textile Soft-Dome Tweeter: A larger-than-typical dome with a neodymium magnet and laser-etched diaphragm, extending to 30kHz for exceptional high-frequency bandwidth and improved power handling compared to 1" dome designs.
  • First-Order 2.5kHz Handmade Crossover: A simple first-order slope minimises phase shift at the crossover transition, assembled point-to-point on insulated polymer with WBT silver solder for maximum signal integrity.
  • Variable Density Fiberboard Cabinet: Denser at the exterior surfaces than the interior to increase structural strength and prevent repetitive resonance nodes, without the coloration associated with uniform-density MDF panels.
  • Lock-Miter Construction: Physically interlocking edge joinery produces a cabinet up to five times stronger than V-groove construction, with the enlarged gluing surface resisting expansion and contraction over decades.
  • Delrin Claw Decoupling Feet: Three conical Delrin polymer claws provide controlled floor decoupling by breaking standing waves between the cabinet and the floor, with thread inserts for optional carpet spikes.
  • No Internal Damping Material: Resonances are controlled through cabinet geometry and construction rather than stuffing, keeping the cabinet musically alive without the energy storage associated with poly fill materials.
  • 88dB Sensitivity, 8-Ohm Impedance: An 8-ohm nominal impedance and high sensitivity make the Bison Tower easy to drive with any quality amplifier, from 30-watt integrated amplifiers to AV receivers and valve designs.
  • Unfussy Placement: Recommended rear-wall distance of 8 inches to 3 feet and speaker spacing of 3 to 10 feet allow integration into a wide range of room sizes, including near-wall positions not typically recommended for floorstanding speakers.
  • 4-Way Bi-Wireable Gold-Plated Terminals: Four binding posts supporting single-wire, bi-wire, and bi-amplification configurations, accepting bare wire, banana plugs, and spades.
  • Magnetic Grilles Included: Tool-free magnetic grilles for driver protection and a clean visual profile.
  • Three Finishes: Available in White Oak, Satin White, and Black Ash with matching magnetic grille colours.
  • Designed and Built in Canada: Every Bison Tower is designed and manufactured by Totem Acoustic in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Totem Bison Tower?

The Totem Bison Tower is a 2-way ported floorstanding loudspeaker designed and built in Montreal, Quebec, Canada by Totem Acoustic, and available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. It is the mid-tier floorstanding model in the Bison series, using a 5.25" copper-clad voice coil woofer and a 1.3" laser-etched textile soft-dome tweeter in a Variable Density Fiberboard lock-mitered monocoque cabinet with Delrin Claw decoupling feet. Key specifications include 88dB sensitivity, 8-ohm nominal impedance, and a frequency response from 30Hz to 30kHz ±3dB. The Bison Tower is sold as a pair, recommended with amplifiers from 30 to 150 watts, and is available in White Oak, Satin White, or Black Ash. It was awarded Hi-Fi+ Highly Commended in 2025.

What is Variable Density Fiberboard and how does it benefit the Bison Tower?

Variable Density Fiberboard is a cabinet material in which the panel's density varies across its cross-section, with approximately 90% density at the exterior surfaces and 65% density toward the interior. The denser exterior provides greater structural strength and shape stability where cabinet walls experience the highest mechanical forces, while the less dense interior avoids the repetitive resonance nodes that occur when uniform-density panels have a single characteristic resonant frequency. In the Bison Tower, VDF is combined with lock-miter joinery and full internal cross-bracing to create a cabinet structure that is mechanically stable without requiring internal damping material — Totem's preference is to control resonances through the cabinet's structural properties rather than absorbing energy with poly fill or similar materials that store and release energy in ways that colour the sound.

How does the Totem Bison Tower compare to the Q Acoustics 3050i and the Wharfedale Evo 4.4?

The Totem Bison Tower, the Q Acoustics 3050i, and the Wharfedale Evo 4.4 are all compact 2-way floorstanding loudspeakers, but they differ substantially in design approach and engineering ambition. The Bison Tower uses a proprietary 5.25" copper-clad voice coil woofer and a 1.3" laser-etched neodymium tweeter in a Variable Density Fiberboard lock-mitered cabinet with Delrin Claw feet, handmade crossover, and a design optimised for spatial imaging and tonal accuracy without rear-wall sensitivity, built to Totem's artisanal Canadian standard. The Q Acoustics 3050i uses a 2.5-way configuration with a dedicated bass driver and Q Acoustics' Point to Point bracing for a different approach to bass integration. The Wharfedale Evo 4.4 is a 2.5-way design with woven glass fibre bass drivers and a fabric dome tweeter, offering a warmer tonal balance than the more neutral Bison Tower. Hi-Fi+ awarded the Bison Tower its Highly Commended distinction, placing it in recommended company at its price level.

What is the Delrin Claw decoupling system on the Bison Tower?

The Delrin Claws are Totem Acoustic's exclusive floor decoupling system for the Bison series, using three conically shaped feet machined from Delrin, a proprietary acetal polymer manufactured by DuPont. Delrin's combination of stiffness, low friction, and controlled elasticity allows the Claw tips to flex very slightly under load, providing controlled mechanical compliance between the cabinet and the floor surface that a rigid metal spike cannot offer. Totem's design intent is that the Claws break standing waves between the speaker and the floor, reducing the transmission of vibrational energy that can colour the bass and soundstage performance. Thread inserts in each Claw foot accommodate optional aftermarket spikes for carpet installations where the Delrin tips might not provide sufficient grip.

Can the Totem Bison Tower be used with an AV receiver for home theatre?

Yes, the Totem Bison Tower is specifically designed to work effectively with any quality amplifier, including AV receivers. Its 8-ohm nominal impedance and 88dB sensitivity make it one of the more receiver-friendly Totem floorstanding designs, compatible with mid-range and high-end AV receivers from Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, and Anthem with per-channel outputs from 30 watts upward. Totem specifically notes the Bison Tower's compatibility with integrated amplifiers, tube amplifiers, and AV receivers in its marketing, reflecting the speaker's design priority of being easy to pair and unfussy about electronics. Its 30Hz to 30kHz frequency response and controlled off-axis imaging make it a capable stereo and multichannel speaker in home theatre applications.

Love the new flavor
Size: 1.45 Pound (Pack of 1)
I have been taking Metamucil for years but was interested in something besides the original orange. For some reason the lemon flavored option didn't seem to be as effective. This is the perfect alternative. Love the taste. I have not seen this one in stores yet. Will purchase more.

Tasty and Effective
Size: 1.45 Pound (Pack of 1)
I don't care for the orange flavored fiber at all, but this tastes good. Normally I get unflavored and add crystal light, so this saves me some effort. The only drawback is that I can't concentrate or dilute the fiber per ounce as much, since that changes the flavor. Personally I find 2 teaspoons per 8oz to be the max dilution I can handle, making it not too flavorful to be chugged while still being just flavorful enough to help me overcome the somewhat odd texture of the fiber. It's best to add this to mildly cold water, mix well (I shake it vigorously in a water bottle), and drink immediately. If it's mixed well in cooler water at the right dilution and you don't wait too long to drink it, the fiber is almost unnoticeable. From my doctor and my own knowledge as an evolutionary biologist: For those of you who are just starting fiber, it's important to not start with the full dose. Doing so can shock your digestive system and have the opposite of the intended effect. Ramp up from one teaspoon, taking it daily (best in the evening) adding an additional teaspoon each week until you reach 4 teaspoons (a tablespoon, the recommended dose). When used regularly and correctly, daily fiber can be a life changer. Our gut microbiome is an integral part of our digestive system. It evolved with our species, and we need to feed it what it evolved to eat!

Sweet but good.
Size: 1.45 Pound (Pack of 1)
Make sure to buy flavorless fibers as well and blend together with this one at least 50/50 if not 25/75 since it's very flavorful and very sweet with not so healthy sweeteners.
