From Simon Howe we turn south and into Cropton Forest and cross

Goathland Circuit via Simon Howe, Cropton Forest, Skelton Tower, Levisham, Hole of Horcum and return to Goathland.

Grade: Moderate to hard

Meet: Outside Scripps Garage at 0800am

From the start we walk up the village to the Mallyan Spout and cut across the moor to meet the Lyke Wake Walk route and head east v towards the ancient burial mound at Simon Howe. From Simon Howe we turn south and into Cropton Forest and cross the North York Moors Railway line at Newtondale Halt. The route then follows the prominent trail along Levisham Bottoms to Skelton Tower. The path then heads due south through Levisham Wood and picks up the Tabular Hills Walk at Farwath and heads north and into the village of Levisham, (refreshment may be available at the Horseshoe PH). Heading back to the moor we follow the top path along Levisham Moor and the Hole of Horcum with splendid views down into the bottom and low Horcum.

The route then tapers off to the left and heads north back to Newtondale Halt and we cross over the railway line for a second time. From here we follow a reciprocal route back to Simon Howe, and cross Goathland Moor. Once we hit the Goathland Road we turn right and head for Moorgates and pick up the old railway line and head off along the Centenary Way and back to Scripp’s Garage and a well-earned drink in the Inn on the Moor.
