Totem Forest Floorstanding Loudspeaker at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Forest is a 2-way floorstanding loudspeaker from Totem Acoustic (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. One of the most enduring and celebrated designs in Canadian high-end audio, the Forest has been recommended by Stereophile in its Class B Full-Range Recommended Components category since its original review in 2001, and received TONE Magazine's Exceptional Value Award in 2011. It is built around a proprietary 6.5" woofer with a 3-inch voice coil and a 1" aluminum dome tweeter in an acoustic chamber, crossing over at 2.5kHz via a 2nd-order compensated network hard-wired with silvered OFC wiring. With an 87dB sensitivity, an 8-ohm nominal impedance, and a frequency response from 30Hz to 20kHz ±3dB, the Forest accepts amplifier power from 50 to 200 watts and stands 34.3 inches tall on a 7.7-inch wide footprint. It is sold as a pair, fitted with Totem's proprietary Claws floor decoupling system, bi-wireable Gold WBT terminals, and magnetic grilles, in exotic veneer or multi-coat Design polyester finishes.

Lock-Mitered Monocoque Construction and Borosilicate Dampening

The Forest's cabinet is assembled using lock-miter joinery, an intricate woodworking technique in which the cabinet's edges physically interlock to create a structure significantly stronger than the V-groove joinery used in conventional enclosures. The resulting monocoque chassis uses the cabinet's external skin as a structural load-bearing element, with extensive cross-bracing and a radically angled internal floor reinforcing the enclosure against the mechanical forces generated by the 6.5" woofer at high excursion levels. All internal surfaces are treated with Borosilicate, the industry-unique internal coating applied across Totem's speaker range, which manages vibration dissipation without deadening the cabinet's acoustic character and does not deteriorate over time. The aerodynamic rounded front baffle and angled rear baffle reduce diffraction at the cabinet edges, allowing the drivers to radiate more cleanly without the edge diffraction colouration that affects flat-baffled designs. The woofer and tweeter are flush-mounted into the baffle, further minimising diffraction. The exclusive hard-wired crossover uses silvered OFC internal wiring and is assembled point-to-point on insulated polymer rather than a printed circuit board, with components joined using WBT silver solder for maximum signal integrity.

Proprietary 6.5" Woofer, Chambered Tweeter, and Claws Decoupling System

The Forest's 6.5" woofer uses a 3-inch voice coil — substantially larger than the voice coils found in most drivers of this cone diameter — allowing greater mechanical control, reduced power compression, and higher dynamic potential at demanding output levels. The driver is a proprietary Totem design, engineered for the specific combination of bass extension and midrange articulation required by the Forest's 2-way topology, with innovative porting technology extending low-frequency output to 30Hz in a typical listening room. The 1" aluminum dome tweeter is housed in its own acoustic chamber to reduce rear-panel resonances and provide isolation from the main cabinet structure, matching the tweeter's output with greater purity at the crossover transition point. At the base of each cabinet, Totem's Claws system provides floor decoupling via large ball bearings that mechanically couple the speaker to the floor while isolating the cabinet from floor-borne vibrations. The Claws interface is a consistent feature of the Forest's design across all production iterations and is described by Stereophile reviewers as a standard installation step before listening. Bi-wireable Gold WBT terminals on the rear panel accept bare wire, banana plugs, and spades for both single-wire and bi-wire cable configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Totem Forest?

The Totem Forest is a 2-way floorstanding loudspeaker designed and built in Montreal, Quebec, Canada by Totem Acoustic, and available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. It uses a 6.5" proprietary woofer with a 3-inch voice coil and a 1" aluminum dome tweeter in an acoustic chamber, crossing over at 2.5kHz in a lock-mitered monocoque cabinet with Borosilicate internal dampening and Totem's Claws ball-bearing floor decoupling system. Key specifications include 87dB sensitivity, an 8-ohm nominal impedance, and a frequency response from 30Hz to 20kHz ±3dB. The Forest has been recommended by Stereophile in Class B Full-Range since 2001 and received TONE Magazine's Exceptional Value Award in 2011. It is sold as a pair in exotic veneer or Design polyester finishes.

What makes the Totem Forest's cabinet construction distinctive?

The Forest's cabinet uses lock-miter joinery, in which cabinet edges physically interlock rather than simply being glued face-to-face, creating a monocoque structure that is significantly stronger than conventionally jointed enclosures. This structural integrity is reinforced by extensive internal cross-bracing and a radically angled internal floor that redirects resonant energy away from the drivers. The inner surfaces are coated with Borosilicate for acoustic dampening that never deteriorates. The aerodynamic rounded front baffle reduces edge diffraction around the driver openings, and the angled rear baffle eliminates the front-to-back parallel surface that would otherwise generate internal standing waves. Drivers are flush-mounted for an unobstructed radiation pattern, and the complete cabinet assembly is treated as a single monocoque acoustic structure rather than a box with separate panels.

How does the Totem Forest compare to the Bowers and Wilkins 603 S3 and the KEF R5 Meta?

The Totem Forest, the Bowers and Wilkins 603 S3, and the KEF R5 Meta are all established slim floorstanding loudspeakers, but each represents a distinct design approach. The Forest uses a 2-way topology with a proprietary 6.5" woofer, lock-mitered monocoque cabinet construction, Borosilicate dampening, and Totem's Claws floor decoupling system, tuned for what Stereophile's reviewers described as holographic imaging, strong bass response, and a seductive midrange character. The B&W 603 S3 uses a 2.5-way configuration with B&W's Continuum cone driver and a decoupled bass section for a different approach to bass integration and midrange clarity. The KEF R5 Meta uses KEF's Uni-Q Metamaterial coaxial driver for exceptionally consistent off-axis imaging from a very slim cabinet. Listeners who prize deep holographic spatial imaging, dynamic surprise, and the sonic character of a Canadian-built proprietary driver in a beautifully crafted enclosure will find the Forest a strong candidate for audition.

What is Totem's Claws system on the Forest?

The Claws are Totem Acoustic's proprietary floor decoupling system, using large ball bearings as the mechanical interface between the speaker cabinet and the floor surface. The ball bearings provide the acoustic coupling benefits of conventional speaker spikes — transferring energy between the speaker and the floor to improve bass definition and soundstage precision — without the floor damage risk of pointed spikes. Unlike rigid spike-to-floor contact, the ball-bearing interface provides a degree of isolation from floor-borne vibrations transmitted upward through the floor structure. Stereophile reviewers consistently noted installing the Claws as a standard step when setting up the Forest, and Totem specifies the system as a critical component of the speaker's designed performance.

What amplifier works best with the Totem Forest?

The Totem Forest has an 87dB sensitivity and an 8-ohm nominal impedance with a 6.4-ohm minimum, making it compatible with amplifiers from 50 to 200 watts. Its 8-ohm load and moderate sensitivity make it one of the more valve-amplifier-friendly Totem designs, and multiple reviewers have noted that the Forest rewards quality amplifier investment — connecting it to budget solid-state amplification is unlikely to reveal its full capability. Quality valve and solid-state integrated amplifiers from Pass Labs, VAC, Simaudio Moon, Hegel, and Naim in the 75 to 150 watt range are natural pairings. TONE Magazine's reviewer noted that spending on worthy components and a quality tube amplifier unlocked the Forest's ability to sound remarkable at its price level.

How should the Totem Forest be positioned in a room?

Totem recommends positioning the Forest between 1 and 6 feet from the rear wall and between 4 and 12 feet apart from each other, offering a wide range of workable positions in rooms of varying size. The Forest benefits from some experimentation with toe-in angle and rear-wall distance to achieve the holographic imaging that defines its reputation, as Stereophile found that the speaker's bass and imaging improved meaningfully with careful setup. Totem also specifically recommends filling the hollow cavities at the base of the Forest cabinet with sand or lead shot to add mass and damp cabinet resonance — this is described in the speaker's manual and has been confirmed by multiple reviewers as an important step in achieving the speaker's designed performance.

Amazing - Stop Scrolling and Buy This Pillow
Size: Queen (Pack of 1), Color: White
I have been an Amazon customer ever since the very beginning, and this is my first review. Not because I haven’t purchased tons of amazing things (and a few bad ones), just never felt the need. However, I researched pillows for longer than I care to admit, and decided on this one. I’ve had it for about six months and absolutely love it. No lie, I genuinely look forward lying my big head on it after a long day. I am a side sleeper, but flip flop all around through the night and it’s great in every position. Pros: Stays nice and cool, which is soothing regardless of the time of year. Has a sort of quilted textured pattern on the zip up cover, gives it a luxury feel, that breaths nicely even when a pillow case is added. The fill is fully adjustable to your preference. I knew it came with extra filling but was worried it would not be enough. Wrong. It was very full and I ended up taking some out until it was perfect. It comes vacuum sealed and suggests it may take some time to fully take shape. However, I found it to be about 90% almost instantly and was sleeping on it a couple hours later. There was no unpleasant scent sometimes associated with memory foam items. The foam itself is very nice, a mix of what appears to be shredded and cotton candy cloud like. Very brilliant idea, as it is somehow supportive, soft and firm all at once. The affordability of this pillow compared to some of the others in this category can’t be overstated. Oh, and the packaging was very thoughtfully and securely done. If you are like me, an over thinker, I would suggest just taking this for a spin. It’s amazing. I’m not a bot, or working for the company. I’m just truly satisfied, love this pillow, and have been sleeping great.

It's the perfect pillow!
Size: Queen (Pack of 1), Color: White
I purchased this pillow specifically for its customizable fill feature, which allows you to add or remove stuffing to suit your personal comfort needs. Due to the unique curvature of my cervical spine—forward at the neck rather than backward—I require a soft, semi-flat pillow rather than one that is thick or firm. Additionally, I often experience ear discomfort by morning, so a gentler surface is essential. Upon adjusting the fill, I was pleasantly surprised by the generous amount of stuffing included. There was enough to fill an additional pillowcase, and I estimate it could easily create four to five more pillows. The ability to modify the pillow’s firmness at any time is an outstanding feature that makes it adaptable for a wide range of preferences and sleep styles. This pillow has exceeded my expectations in both comfort and versatility. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a personalized sleep experience.

Good quality pillows overall
Size: King (Pack of 2), Color: White
Got a set of these for my wife and myself as we were struggling with our old pillows. These have some really good qualities and some things we'd like to see changed. First, the good: These are look and feel like they are high quality and made with good materials. The foam itself has a very nice feel to it. We love the fact they are adjustable to add or remove foam. They come with a pretty substantial amount already in the pillow. We appreciate the CertiPur certification. Now the improvements or changes we'd like to see: The foam, while feeling great, doesn't bounce back well if you scrunch your pillows, and so every day you have to fluff and reshape the pillow, moreso than some other memory foam pillows we've owned. One side of the pillow is cooled and you can feel that even through the pillow case, and that's a great thing. However, one side is not cooled and we'd have preferred if both sides were made of the cooling material. Overall, these are good pillows and we are not disappointed with the purchase. They are not, however, our perfect pillows (which do seem hard to find), and at some point in the future will probably make their way to the guest bedroom. We would rate them as some of the better pillows we've tried and feel most people would probably like them.

Size: Queen (Pack of 1), Color: White
These are the best pillows ever. You can adjust the firmness or softness to whatever you want. For years i used a soft latex pillow , which you cant get anymore. I will never use another pillow. I have purchased 6 of these after the first one. You pick your own comfort level. Best ever. No more neck aches.

Hallelujah… finally, I found the right pillow!!!
Size: Queen (Pack of 1), Color: White
I have spent a lot of money searching for the right pillow. I recently tried to Tempur-pedic that cost twice with this pillow cost. Tempur-pedic flattened out. I’ve had this pill for a few weeks now and it works wonders. I am a paraplegic. You can have a lot of neck problems. I love the fact that this pillow is adjustable. I immediately saw it was too stuffy and took a bunch out. It works perfect so glad I didn’t spend money on a $200 purple pillow. I read a lot of reviews and there were a lot of complaints about the odor. Mine did smell funny when it came out of the box. I immediately threw it in the dryer with a few bounce fabric sheets came out smelling fine. Pillows are a very individual thing, but I think for 40 bucks this pillow is worth a try. I’m really enjoying mine about one of those silk pillowcases to go over it and it sleeps cool and comfortable. Best wishes in your search for the right pillow. Update: I’ve been using this pillow several months and it continues. Give me a good night rest pain-free.. well worth the money. UPDATE: I have been using this pillow for three months and it still works great. It does not flat out or get hot..
