ALL RESERVATION FEES WILL BE APPLICABLE TOWARDS ANY NIB GRINDING SERVICES. RESERVATION FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

Matthew Chen is a full-time nib grinder from the Los Angeles, California area. He has had the honor of learning specialty grinds from both Yukio Nagahara, whose father created the Naginata series of nibs for Sailor, and Mike Masuyama, a legendary nibmeister whom he regularly works with at pen shows. The grinding machine he works with is designed to utilize the same grinding wheels that Nagahara and Masuyama use. Nagahara has granted him permission to provide the same specialty grinds he is known for.

Matthew will be offering the following nib grinding services on Sunday, January 18, 2026 from 10AM-6PM at our shop in Downtown Santa Ana, California (305 E. 4th St. Suite 103, Santa Ana, CA 92701) during our special in shop event with Tono&Lims A Deep Sea Walk 2026 Winter with M.Lovewell

Each 20 minute time slot will usually allow for 2-3 nib grinds. With 4 or more grinds please reserve another time slot.

Nagahara Specialty Grinds ($80)

Kodachi : This grind is a Naginata Togi ground from non-Sailor blanks. It is designed to recreate brush strokes for Japanese and Chinese calligraphy when used a certain way. For western writing it will act like a very forgiving architect that has line variation depending on the writing angle. Coarse or Zoom nibs are ideal for this grind, though it can be done from as small as a Medium nib.

Uranagi : A Kodachi flipped upside down, the regular writing side will write like an Ultra Extra Fine (this can be modified to your preference) and the reverse will write like a mini Kodachi. Broad nibs or larger are ideal for this grind.

Fude Point : A nib bent up to utilize part of nib's body as a writing surface. This nib will write like a brush with variable line widths depending on the angle. This nib is picky on the inner cap clearance so it cannot be done on some pens. Steel nibs are recommended as the nib body will be used as a writing surface, but gold nibs do work as long as you know that the writing surface will wear down faster.

Beak Point : The reverse of the Fude Point, the regular side will write like a normal nib while  the reverse side will write like a brush.

Specialty Grinds ($70)

Japanese F to UEF/Needlepoint : Ultra fine points for your tiny writing needs.

Architect : A grind that has a thin vertical line and a thick horizontal line. Typical Architects require a very specific writing angle and can dig into the paper with any slight variance, however I make my architects on the rounder side to alleviate this issue.

Standard Grinds ($60)

Stub, Cursive Italic, Sharp Italic : These types of nibs have a thick vertical line and a thin horizontal line to give your writing a flair. The difference is how thin the horizontal line is. A stub will be smooth with some line variation, a Cursive Italic will have a horizontal line as thin as possible without digging into the paper, and an Italic will have the thinnest horizontal line possible at the cost of smoothness.

Obliques : Oblique grinds are meant for people that prefer to hold their pen at a rotation standard nibs are not meant to write at. These nibs can also angle the flair a Stub, Cursive Italic, or Sharp Italic has.

Size Down : Sometimes the nib you bought is just too thick for your writing and you can't exchange it for a smaller nib. Grinding down the nib will bring it to a size you can use.

Tune/Smooth ($30)

If your pen is scratchy, too dry, too wet, or just doesn't want to work, a tune or smooth will get that fixed.

FNP Student
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
These nursing review books were highly recommended by other FNP students, and I’m so glad I purchased them! They’ve been incredibly helpful for studying and answering practice questions, with detailed rationales to deepen my understanding. I find them especially useful since so much is online now—it’s great to have something tangible to reference. Highly recommend for anyone needing a solid study tool!

Definitely Recommend
Format: Paperback
This book is very helpful and I definitely recommend it as a resource. It simplifies complex concepts and is organized by body system. It highlights the major health conditions in each body system and provides a simple and concise explanation. At the end of every concept a mini quiz is offered to test comprehension. I’ve found this book very useful during the semester and I’m sure I’ll find it helpful for boards.

It's good but Leik is better
Format: Paperback
This is a fairly good review book for the FNP exam and I've had professors recommend it's use. However, the review book by Leik is better in that it delivers information in a short-and-sweet way that still covers the most crucial information. Fitzgerald requires a little more reading and unfortunately I just don't have the attention span for that anymore. I need short paragraphs, bullet points, and the most crucial information that will give me success for the FNP exam and Leik provides that a little more than this.
