About the work

Joan Jonas’ edition for the Whitechapel Gallery Mountain Owl, 2016, depicts an owl derived from one of the artist’s water colours. The owl is a familiar character in Jonas’ installations. Her frame of reference continues to span the folkloric and the canonical, touching on animism, myth and social rituals that are common to all world cultures. She draws regularly from literary influences – from Dante’s epic Divine Comedy to the Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness’ writings on the spiritual aspects of nature, which served as an important reference point for They Come to Us without a Word (2015), her recent critically-acclaimed work for the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (9 May – 22 November 2015).

About the artist

Joan Jonas lives and works between New York and Cape Breton, U.S. and emerged as a key figure in the performance art and feminist movements of the 60s. The year 1979 saw Jonas’ UK debut at the Whitechapel Gallery. She presented video works and series of live performances titled The Juniper Tree, which incorporated movement, sound, film, mirrors and props in a reinterpretation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name.

Jonas is a pioneer of early video art, performance and installation. At the same time the themes that continue to shape her work – myth as a conduit to the subjective and social unconscious; the holistic yet destructive relations of humans with other species; the fragility of the natural environment; and the creativity of play – often represented by children – make her work of vital relevance to the 21st century.

Brilliant fun for dog, except for...
I have a 3yo German Shepherd Dog (GSD) and he can be very hard on toys. On days 1 and 2 he had such fun and we laughed at his good times! Then...Day 3...cue the Jaws Music... While I was away for 10 minutes, he dismantled the ball into tiny pieces! Even so, the ball continued to light up, make sounds and entertain my GSD!! Coolest dog toy ever! If you have a heavy chewer....watch out! Otherwise, I highly recommend!!

Disappointing Dog Toy – Short-Lived and Ineffective
I purchased this dog toy hoping it would keep my dog entertained and engaged, but unfortunately, it has been a huge disappointment. The first one I received only worked for about an hour before completely stopping. I decided to give it another chance and ordered a second one, hoping it was just a fluke. Unfortunately, the second one lasted even shorter—only 30 minutes—before completely ceasing to function. It no longer vibrates, rotates, or interacts in any way. Even when fully charged, the toy barely lights up and doesn’t do anything useful. This is a terrible product, and I’m genuinely shocked by the positive reviews. Save your money—this toy is not worth it.

My dog loves it
My Aussie loves it and he is a tough chewer as well, so it goes great with his hyper reactive personality. Durability could have been a little better, sometimes I have to take it apart and make sure it’s still in a good position because my dog will pick it up and drop it. With no cushion it did start malfunctioning at about 2 weeks. However, it does still work fine and he loves it even without the movement. Note if you put it in a sock to protect it, my dog goes dangerous and held the sock and created a slingshot lol.

My Rottweiler loves it!
My Rottie plays with this for hours at a time! He loves it! It fun to watch too! The plastic is high quality and has lasted for 2 weeks, so far. That pretty good for a Rottie toy! He loves the lights, vibration, and the fact that it rolls away. So fun!
