INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Support People Experiencing Homelessness or at Risk of Becoming Homeless course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in reflecting on values and attitudes, identifying housing barriers, supporting participation in service planning, assessing safety and homelessness risk, referring to appropriate services, providing housing assistance, advocating and negotiating for access to supports according to organisational procedures, legislative requirements and the person’s needs.
Supporting people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless involves recognising the personal, social, safety and systemic factors that may affect access to safe and secure housing, while working respectfully with people to identify needs, risks, options and practical pathways to support. This work is important because homelessness-related support requires sensitive assessment, person-led planning, timely referrals, advocacy, negotiation, discrimination response and service access strategies that help people address immediate safety concerns, complex housing barriers and longer-term support needs.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to reflect on personal values and attitudes regarding homelessness; identify barriers to safe and secure housing; support participation in planning and service activities; assess personal safety; report and refer unsafe situations according to procedures and legislative requirements; assess issues affecting homelessness risk and modify service approaches; work with people to identify solutions to complex issues; refer to key agencies, services and personnel; provide housing options advice and assistance; advocate and negotiate for services; support self-advocacy and negotiation; support responses to discrimination affecting housing access; negotiate access pathways to support services and housing providers; apply advocacy techniques sensitive to cultural background, age and gender; and advocate within the community on issues affecting people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can support people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless by reflecting on practice, identifying housing barriers and safety risks, supporting person-led planning, adapting service delivery, providing housing information, arranging referrals, advocating and negotiating access to services, responding to discrimination and contributing to community-level action that supports safe and secure housing outcomes.
