About the work

Miroslaw Balka has created The Wall / Always Fragment, 2022 especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition ‘A Century of The Artist’s Studio: 1920 – 2020’, 24 February – 5 June 2022.

The starting point for Balka’s edition, is a photograph, taken by the artist in his first studio space, where he worked from 1985 until 1993. For Balka this was an important transformative period, which shaped his work. The wall and hooks used for hanging the works took on a presence of their own - many of the artist’s key works touched the wall and Balka describes it as a kind of observer to his practice. After the renovation of the space, the wall was also changed, so this photograph exists as the last portrait of the wall.

Printed onto concrete, Balka’s wall-based sculpture recreates a fragment of the original studio wall. Used in many of his works, concrete holds a particular significance for the artist, as a material used by his grandfather, a monumental mason who made many tombstones in Otwock cemetery.

About the artist

Miroslaw Balka (b. 1958, Warsaw, Poland; lives and works in Otwock, Poland) is one of Poland’s most prominent contemporary sculptors and inter-disciplinary artists. Much of his own lived experience, as well as the impact and collective memory of social and political events in Poland’s history are symbolically represented and examined in his works, informed by the melancholy of the post-Cold War landscape and the Holocaust. His materials are simple, unadorned and everyday objects such as soap, hair, bones and wood. His studio in Otwock, next to the house he grew up in, acts as a point of reference, a repository and even a material source for the objects he works with which are often found in the environs of the house. Balka, in his words ‘warmed up the space’ in order for it to become a place of art making and also display.

Fantastic Boots!
Size: 8.5, Color: Redwood/Gum 10
Completely satisfied with these boots. True to size, well made, comfortable from the get-go; not break in needed. Waterproof- really. The Red Suede has withstood a nasty winter season & still looks great. Good traction. I like the ankle height which looks good with long, mid length pants & leggings. I love the easy slip on/off aspect..made getting ready for dog walking easy. I 100%recommend!

Definitely worth the price
Size: 6.5, Color: Black/Black
Absolutely love these boots! I originally bought them to wear in NYC in December & they did not disappoint. They were comfortable, cute, durable and worked well in the slush/snow. The traction on the bottom is also nice! They kept me warm with wool socks. I wear them almost daily now. Perfect for everyday. easy to wear with variety of outfits. Good every day shoe.

Snagged a deal
Size: 7, Color: Redwood/Gum 10
I waited and waited to get these boots! I knew I was chancing it, but they went on sale, and I snagged them! I am a size 7, and they fit nicely with socks. a little loose, barefooted, but what psycho wears boots without socks? They are comfortable and really well-made.

Cute, comfortable waterproof boots (a little snug to put on)
Size: 7, Color: Velvet Tan/Gum 2
These are really cute Chelsea-style boots and feel very comfortable once they’re on. The waterproof material is great for wet weather and the sole feels sturdy with good traction. They look stylish enough to wear casually but still feel practical for rainy days. The only downside is they can be a little difficult to put on at first because the opening is somewhat snug, but once they’re on they fit well and feel supportive. Overall they’re a great waterproof boot and I’ve enjoyed wearing them.
