Indapamide Description
Indapamide is a tablet you take each day to help reduce your blood pressure.
You can take it on its own or with other medicines that manage high blood pressure.
The usual dose is one 2.5mg tablet a day, which can be raised to 5mg.

What is Indapamide?

Indapamide is an antihypertensive medication, part of a group known as diuretics or water tablets. It's used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and oedema, a condition where excess fluid causes swelling in your body's tissues.

Indapamide works by widening blood vessels, which makes it easier for blood to circulate around your body, helping to reduce blood pressure. It's a tablet you take once a day and also comes in a slow-release form that lasts longer. Sometimes, your doctor might prescribe another blood pressure tablet to take with Indapamide to better control your high blood pressure.

How does Indapamide work?

Indapamide is a type of diuretic, often called a "water tablet." These tablets help your kidneys produce more urine, which means you'll need to pee more frequently. This process helps remove excess water and salt from your body, reducing fluid build-up. With less fluid in your body and bloodstream, your blood pressure decreases. Indapamide can also alleviate symptoms of heart failure, such as swelling (oedema). Unlike some other diuretics, Indapamide only slightly increases urine output. Its primary function is to widen your blood vessels, which lowers the pressure inside them and helps manage high blood pressure.

Who is Indapamide for?

Indapamide is mainly used for those with high blood pressure, but it can also aid in preventing heart failure and oedema. Oedema happens when there's too much salt and fluid in your blood, raising the risk of heart failure. This medication helps reduce swelling, manages fluid retention, and is used over the long term to prevent heart issues.

What doses does Indapamide come in?

Indapamide comes in both regular tablets and slow-release tablets, which gradually release the medicine into your body. If you have heart failure, you might be given a dose of 2.5 mg to 5 mg to take once daily. It can also be combined with perindopril, an ACE inhibitor, to help manage high blood pressure. For high blood pressure, you might be prescribed 2.5 mg in regular tablets or 1.5 mg once daily in slow-release tablets.

How long does Indapamide take to work?

Treatments for high blood pressure are generally needed for life, so continue taking your medication until your doctor advises otherwise. Indapamide is quickly absorbed after you take it, reaching peak levels in your blood within one to two hours. However, it may take two to four weeks to notice an impact on your blood pressure, and several months to experience the full benefits of Indapamide.

What happens if I make a mistake taking Indapamide?

If you normally take your tablet in the morning and it's now past 4 p.m., just skip the missed dose and take your usual one the next morning. Avoid taking two doses to make up for the one you missed. If you've taken more than you should, you might feel nauseous, have cramps, feel dizzy or drowsy, become confused, or get dehydrated. If this happens, seek medical help straight away.

What are the side effects of Indapamide?

As with any medication, Indapamide can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most frequent side effect is a red skin rash that resembles an allergic reaction, especially if you're already susceptible to allergy-related skin issues. Another common side effect is low potassium levels in your blood, which your clinician will monitor regularly.

Can I drink alcohol whilst taking Indapamide?

Yes, you can drink alcohol while taking Indapamide. However, it's wise to drink in moderation, as excessive alcohol can lower your blood pressure and make you feel dizzy and light-headed.

Will Indapamide cause changes to my weight?

Indapamide can lead to a slight weight loss. This happens because the medication helps reduce fluid retention and swelling (oedema). So, if you notice a drop in weight while taking Indapamide, it's due to losing fluids, not body fat. It's important to use diuretics like Indapamide only as prescribed, as using them solely for weight loss can harm your kidneys.

Are there alternatives to Indapamide for high blood pressure?

There are many choices available to help you manage your high blood pressure. You might also be prescribed another antihypertensive medication alongside Indapamide as part of your treatment. The most common medicine paired with Indapamide is perindopril, which is a long-acting ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor.

There are various ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers (CCBs) available to help reduce blood pressure. CCBs function by stopping calcium from entering the arteries and cells of your heart, as calcium can make them contract forcefully. ACE inhibitors, on the other hand, help by relaxing your blood vessels. If you experience significant side effects from ACE inhibitors, you might be switched to angiotensin-2 receptor blockers, or ARBs, which work similarly to ACE inhibitors.

Beta-blockers help by blocking adrenaline and noradrenaline, which slows the heart rate and makes it beat more gently. This helps to lower blood pressure and improve blood circulation. You can also take them alongside Indapamide.

How effective is Indapamide?

Numerous studies have demonstrated that treating hypertension with Indapamide, whether used alone or alongside another blood pressure medication like perindopril, is effective for many patients. In one study focusing on individuals over 80, it was found that after two years, their average blood pressure dropped by 15.0/6.1 mm Hg compared to those given a placebo. Additionally, there was a 30% to 39% decrease in strokes, a 21% reduction in deaths, and a 64% drop in heart failure cases.

A study examining the combined use of Indapamide and perindopril found that blood pressure dropped by 12/5 mm Hg, and the risk of stroke was reduced by 43%.

This indicates that Indapamide is very effective for treating high blood pressure, and it also helps with symptoms of heart failure and reduces the risk of stroke.

Do I need a prescription for Indapamide?

Yes, you'll need a prescription for Indapamide. A clinician will need to check your blood pressure to ensure it's a safe and appropriate treatment for you.

Great value for your money!
Color: A-Silver
Yessss! Real espresso maker! Excellent brewing capacity. Easy to use. Made with great quality material. The machine comes with all the pamphlets & easy to read instructions which say to heat twice for extra hot coffee, but honestly the coffee comes out VERY hot & tasty without double-heating. Also comes carefully packaged to prevent damage during delivery. Great value for your money!

Plastic, but Well Performing Machine
Color: A-Silver
My household has been using the Casabrewa 5418 PRO multiple times a day for over a month now. It's function and directions are excellent. With some experimenting, it makes acceptable and delicious espresso. This is an entry model machine that does exactly what you want it to. It heats fast and produces espresso fast. However, for the price point the amount of plastic is a bit disappointing. The machine has the appearance of being stainless steel while being constructed almost entirely of plastic. If you want an entry level espresso machine and you don't mind the plastic, this is an excellent option.

Who cares if its plastic... let's not be silly

Why are people so obsessed with metal housing? Metal literally serves no purpose. It's just a cover. It won't make a better coffee with metal housing nor will it last longer. I personally don't care what it "feels" like to touch it, I don't even notice it. I make coffee with it, it's a tool. I don't touch it to "feel how nice it is". That's just weird. Anyway, what a great machine. To me instant heating is worth all the missing features of fancier machines combined. I've had it for several months now, and I have it dialed in. I make up to 5-6 lattes a day and I've made about a 1000 by now. Still working great. Not interested in upgrading.

Great Budget Espresso Machine That Performs Better Than Others Costing Much More
Color: A-Silver
I’ve been using the Casabrews 5418 Pro for a few months now and it’s been a solid addition to my kitchen. It looks sleek and feels well‑built for the price, and it heats up extremely fast — reaching brewing temperature in just a few seconds thanks to its FlashHeat™ system. The 20‑bar pump and built‑in pressure gauge give you good feedback while pulling shots, and the steam wand produces nicely textured milk for lattes and cappuccinos. The removable water tank is a nice touch and makes refilling easy. While it’s not perfect — the included portafilter and tamper feel a budget‑oriented and the pressurized baskets don’t deliver espresso as rich as you’d get from higher‑end machines — it’s a great performer for beginners or casual espresso drinkers. Upgrade the portafilter basket and tamper but for a more premium experience especially if using it daily. That said, the included accessories are perfectly fine for a casual user. Overall, this machine offers excellent value for the price. If you want a compact, easy‑to‑use espresso maker that consistently produces enjoyable drinks (especially milk‑based ones), this is a great choice. I am more than pleased with my purchase and you will be too. One thing that I learned and it’s the most significant piece of information I will pass along. You don’t need an espresso dark roast coffee for espresso. It’s your preferred roast, grind, and freshness that make the difference. Try your favorite roast in an espresso grind and enjoy!

Great buy, especially in its price range and perhaps even beyond
Color: A-Silver
Hope not to jinx it and have to change this review in six months but I'm extremely pleased with this machine. I've gone through two DeLonghis that lasted me each 4-5 years and I've liked them a lot, but both have eventually leaked and had quirks that were never ever answered/remedied by their customer service. I bought this Casabrews on spec, after looking through all sorts of alternatives, even hand models. I read through customer reviews, including the negative ones complaining about noise, its weight (or, rather lack of), claims over shoddy materials (its plastic components), alleged issues with its wand and basket, the quality of its shots, and so on. I was concerned about buying a product from a relatively new company with a short track record. But, OTOH, there were some very positive, persuasive reviews online. I'm from a coffee-producing nation and have more of it in my veins than blood so it's an absolute daily must-have that an increasingly leaking DeLonghi wasn't going to provide for long so I was facing an emergency. That this model was on sale at Amazon was a welcome incentive since, by the same token that I know what I like in coffee and scoff at the pretentious, opinionated coffee snobishness that too often characterizes conversations over it in the US, I've never been persuaded by the fancy-schmancy high-end, pocket-gouging machines on the market. While I've only had it for several weeks, I'm delighted with it. It's way faster than my old DeLonghis. I love that I don't have to hover over it watching to make sure it doesn't overflow because it turns itself off--and while I'm perfectly happy with the amount I'm getting without tinkering with it, it's programmable for longer shots. It's relatively quieter--noise complaints are likely from new users of espresso machines unused to their noise. It is lighter than my old machines, but the good news is that the basket fit loosens with use and a light hand on top of it solves the issue. The quibble about the basket falling from the wand seems to be more, again, about unobservant users who don't notice their design and the notch that locks the basket in place. It's also a preferable design than the wire in the DeLonghis, which would get loose and end up in our countertop compost bin when shaking out the puck. I even prefer the wetter pucks of used coffee it produces because they're way easier to scoop out of the basket than the DeLonghi's rock hard ones (even bent one of my demitasse spoons once). And, most importantly, the coffee is ABSOLUTELY FINE, even preferable to what I'd been getting from my old machines. And, hey, if it happens to have a short life, I'll just return and revise my rating and review.
