Royer R-10 Studio/Live Ribbon Microphone

A Royer For Everyone

Every Royer R-10 delivers the sonic excellence, flexibility and durability that recording & FOH engineers know they can expect from Royer, but at an easier-to-handle price point than most expect!

The R-10 is a passive, mono ribbon microphone designed for use in the studio and on live stages. Hand-built in our Burbank California factory, the R-10 is exceptionally rugged, handling SPLs of up to 160 dB @ 1 kHz (!), and its compact size and mounting system allow for flexible, unobtrusive positioning.

The R-10’s 2.5-micron aluminum ribbon element (same as in the legendary R-121) is formed with our patented direct-corrugation process, and is extremely well-protected by a 3-layer windscreen system and internally shock-mounted ribbon transducer. The R-10’s built-in windscreen provides superior protection from air blasts and plosives, while also reducing proximity effect (bass buildup from close miking) so guitar cabinets and acoustic instruments can be more easily close-miked. The internally shock-mounted ribbon transducer isolates the ribbon element from unwanted vibrations, decreasing rumble and increasing the ribbon element’s durability.  The transducer is even wired for humbucking to better reject electromagnetically induced noise!

The R-10 utilizes a David Royer custom-designed transformer for high overload threshold, minimizing saturation at even extremely high sound pressure levels.

You’ll never overload an R-10!

The mic’s open grill design minimizes standing waves and associated comb-filtering effects and its smooth frequency response, phase linearity and lack of self-distortion make it ideal for all digital recording and live sound formats.

A Ribbon For Everything

Royer ribbons are an industry staple on electric guitar. The R-10 shows some of its best stuff on studio and live electrics, capturing all the low end, midrange warmth, highs and punch that guitarists and engineers expect from a Royer.

The R-10 is outstanding on brass. Close-miked trumpets, trombones, and other brass instruments are no problem – the R-10 captures them the way they’re supposed to sound; toneful and powerful and as bright as the instrument is played, but with none of the sizzle and harshness many microphones tend to generate on brass.

On keyboards, the full-spectrum performance of an R-10 (or two) inside an acoustic piano is jaw dropping, and Hammond enthusiasts can expect phenomenal results by positioning an R-10 (or two) next to a Leslie cabinet, or paired with their instrument amplification system of choice.

The R-10 is extremely well suited for vocals, from singing to the spoken word. Its reduced proximity effect and protective wind filter, combined with its classic natural tone and ribbon warmth, allow for the R-10 to capture a wide range of vocal performances beautifully. Ribbon mics take EQ extremely well, so boosting highs and utilizing creative positioning opens up all kinds of new possibilities.

Drums record full-bodied, with realistic (never over-hyped!) transients response, and the R-10’s figure-8 pattern conveys superb ambience and depth when used for room miking applications. A compressed R-10 in front of the kit sounds huge and punchy.

R-10 recordings of violins, cellos, steel-stringed and nylon-stringed acoustic guitars, ukuleles, banjos, and other stringed instruments are open and realistic, fitting into just about any mix smoothly.

The R-10 is truly an excellent tool for recording almost any sound source you can think of!

See Audio/Video tab below for sound samples and mic comparisons.

Royer’s Patented Offset Ribbon Technology Onboard

The R-10’s patented offset-ribbon design positions the ribbon element toward the front of the transducer, which allows for high SPL handling on the front (logo) side and the option of a brighter response when recording lower SPL sound sources like acoustic guitar, ukulele and vocals on the backside (3 feet or closer; phase reversed position).

Easy instructions, comfortable cushions
Color: Pink
I just put it together and I love it!!! It's so comfortable and it was easy to put together. You can rock it back and forth which helps your back. The seat is very wide and the cushion is thick. Pink is my favorite color, and this chair satisfies my pink obsession.

Wonderful chair
Color: Dark Black
I bought this office chair as a sewing tool, you might say. I felt that having an office chair on wheels would get me from the sewing machine to the ironing board and then to the cutting board and back to the sewing machine. I was having to get up and down to get around to all these places before and this saves me so much time and effort. I’m 71 so when the box came I was hesitant to try to bust into it and put it together but it went together so easily. It’s very comfortable and the lumbar support feels great on my low back. When I first sat down after the assembly process, the chair cushion tipped down in the front but after contacting the support team I was advised to tighten the tilt tension located under the chair and that fixed me right up! All and all, my chair is the perfect addition to my sewing area at a very affordable price. I couldn’t be happier!

Comfortable, affordable, and great for small spaces!
Color: Light Purple, Color: Light Purple
I had previously left a review of two stars, but have since deleted that review after I've owned the chair for a few weeks now. Initially, I stated the chair was uncomfortable and not cushioned at all. But this issue quickly resolved after sitting it for a longer time, it seems the cushion molds to you. So it may be uncomfortable the first few times sitting on it, but it eventually softens. The cushion is now soft yet sturdy. You don't sink in too much, but it's comfortable for sitting for long periods of time. I personally enjoy the mesh back as well, it supports my lower back and doesn't cause back pain. Normally I have to use a cushion of my own to support my lower back for most chairs, but this one actually supports me in a way that doesn't require an extra cushion - so that's really nice. The chair is fairly on the smaller end, which is perfect for low desks or tight spaces, which is exactly what I wanted. The height can be adjusted, but even at the highest setting, it is still fairly low. Keep that in mind - it may not be super comfortable for those over 6 ft. The arms flip up which makes storing it under a low desk very easy. The cushion is thick and very accurate to the picture. I love that it is lightweight and doesn't make much noise when rolling the chair. It also feels very sturdy. Some of the reviews say it feels flimsy, and I don't know if some are just assembling it incorrectly, because for me this thing is very strong and holds up quite nicely under my weight. Overall, this is exactly what I wanted for my personal living space. A chair that's not too bulky, but comfortable enough to sit in for long hours. It functions as advertised for this purpose. One final thing -- the color selection is gorgeous. I bought the light purple color and it fits my setup nicely! Color was accurate to the picture, and looks very cute and adorable in my space.

Surprisingly amazing chair!
Color: Pink, Color: Pink
tl;dr: If you need a chair that has the features of this one, then this one is a winner! Hits above its weight class for sure. My wife is 5’. She’s small. For whatever reason she ended up with a chair made for big people, like 6+ feet and up to 500lbs type of a chair. She’d often even sleep on it and chill on it. The chair was big enough to fit 2 of her to be honest. It was an expensive chair that I won at some raffle and didn’t like myself. Over the years it ripped (got a cover for it) and even started to get lopsided (from the sleeping) and finally a spring broke (hence the pillow on it in the pictures) She obviously lives pink. I also wanted to get a chair where she could work and not end ip asleep on. Not like we have a couch or a bed for that 😂. This chair is very obviously smaller than her previous chair, it’s also significantly cheaper in price and build, it’s also not as durable feeling or stable, and it’s just not as padded. Yet somehow it’s an amazing chair that we both like better than her previous chair??? Like it’s crazy that this chair somehow works better in so many ways. Her desk is modified to be shorter than normal desks (again, she small lol) and her previous chair was just too big. The wheels are also like SUPER smooth, like you can run a chair race easily with it. It rolls over her rug and tucks into her desk (which is in our bedroom) easily. The amount of space this has save us when the chair isn’t being used is a lot. Previous chair was much bigger and didn’t tuck in at all. The color is nice and the padding is plenty for a small and much lighter than 500lbs woman. I’m 6 feet and 200 lbs and the chair is nice for me as well. My chair is bigger and more secure in the backing, which is similar to this one. The lowest tension setting on my chair is still too high for her to lean back on my chair. This chair has a lower tension minimum and she can easily lean back freely, as well as keep enough tension to work without sagging. This chair is surprisingly outstanding! I’m sure my wife will destroy it quicker than the last one, but it’s so cheap that even if it only lasts 1-3 years, I’ll happily buy it ones or twice more 🤷🏽‍♀️. Maybe by then they’ll invent a comfortable titanium chair that’s affordable that she won’t destroy 😂.
