A Seat at the Table is the story of the founding of Busboys and Poets, a Washington, D.C.–based restaurant that has become a celebrated hub for political activism. Named in honor of Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy while writing poetry, the restaurant is the creation of Andy Shallal, an Iraqi American restaurateur, artist, and activist.

In this fast-paced, personal, and often humorous story, we follow Andy from his teenage years on, helping out in his family’s pizza business, changing his name, abandoning a career in medicine, working in some of the city’s best restaurants, and eventually opening a restaurant of his own.

A rave review by legendary Washington Post food critic Phyllis Richman puts the new place on the map. Long lines form outside. Andy witnesses the power of food to bring people together. He creates a meeting space and a bookshop upstairs. The idea of a restaurant as a social and political hub begins to take shape.

In these pages we encounter the galaxy of progressive authors and activists who have frequented Andy’s restaurants, everyone from Marion Barry and Jesse Jackson to Ralph Nader, Howard Zinn, Jerry Brown, Alice Walker, and Angela Davis.

Packed with misadventures, unexpected triumphs, and insights on race, business and politics, A Seat at the Table takes us on a “How I Built This” journey that ends with the opening of the first Busboys and Poets, now just one of eight D.C. locations bearing the same name. Along the way, we get to savor the delicious cuisine and unique ethos for which Busboys and Poets has become famous.

Not working for me 100%
Still not sure about how this magnesium affects me. I have only been taking one tablet an hour or two before bedtime. Seems like sometimes I can’t go to sleep after taking it, charges up my brain. Other times I sleep but have crazy dreams. Maybe it works for some, but not others. I’ll try to finish the bottle, but the lack of sleep after taking the Magnesium L-Threonate makes me hesitant to continue some nights. That’s mainly the reason I purchased this brand to include the reviews.

very good
Format: Kindle
Another good addition to this publisher's collection. The book is well organized, flows well and is very readable. The main thing I have like about this series is that they don't just cover the "highlights," although they do a good job on those, but how they cover more of the daily lives of the people. I was surprised at exactly how hard the people's lives were by choice, not just men but woman as well. I can't imagine being drafted into the military at age 5 or 6 and staying there until you were thirty. And eating "black soup" a concoction made of pork, pigs' blood, onions, salt and vinegar. To paraphrase a quote, it's no wonder Spartans were prepared to die when all you eat was this soup! I was also surprised by the freedoms including education and land ownership of the woman of Sparta giving the era.....and the sexual freedom they had was more surprising. There is a lot more information of interest. This is a good book and most will enjoy reading it

This was a well written and entertaining overview of the Spartans. The information was well put together and easy to understand. I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
