INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Support Children Affected by Domestic & Family Violence course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in building trust with children and young people, identifying needs and safety risks, responding sensitively to individual circumstances, developing support plans, arranging referrals, advocating for safety and completing required records and reports according to organisational standards, legislative requirements and statutory requirements.
Supporting children affected by domestic and family violence involves creating safe and welcoming environments, establishing rapport and trust, encouraging children and young people to express their feelings, experiences and fears, and using interpersonal skills to identify their needs accurately. This work is important because children and young people affected by domestic and family violence require age-appropriate, developmentally responsive and culturally sensitive support that prioritises physical and emotional safety, recognises immediate risk indicators, respects their rights and wishes, and connects them with appropriate services, referrals, family support, parenting support and follow-up.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to establish confidence, rapport and trusting relationships with children and young people; encourage communication about feelings, experiences and fears; respond to cultural, family, individual and specific needs; create safe and welcoming environments; inform children and young people about rights, service options and support options; apply organisational, legislative and statutory requirements; use interpersonal skills to identify needs; respond immediately to risk indicators and threats to safety; recognise worker limitations; seek assistance when needs exceed role capacity; collect and assess information for complexity, urgency and safety; develop and document support plans according to needs and wishes; provide age-appropriate strategies that consider developmental level, physical safety and emotional safety; provide services, referrals, family support, parenting support and short-term follow-up; and advocate for children’s needs and rights to safety while completing required records and reports.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can support children affected by domestic and family violence by building trusting relationships, encouraging safe communication, identifying needs and safety risks, applying organisational and statutory requirements, developing appropriate support plans, arranging referrals and follow-up, advocating for children’s safety and completing accurate records and reports according to organisational requirements.
