The Pinot Noir Gumpoldskirchen 'Grillenhügel' from Familie Reinisch is a wine of exquisite beauty. Mystical notes of dark raspberry, blueberry, wild strawberry and violet sing from the glass, they’re accompanied by a sweeter note, like dark caramel or vanilla liquorice. The palate is so harmonious. At first, red fruits that fill the mouth giving it a strong fruity core. The fruit gives way to a spiciness, vanilla, nutmeg and charred wood, which is followed by an earthiness, akin to wet rock and forest floor. Silky tannins round off the wine that has so much complexity, it’s no wonder the wine lingers on the palate long after you’ve finished your sip and even your bottle – this is a wine that you’ll remember for much longer.
The Gumpoldskirchen 'Grillenhügel' Pinot Noir takes its name from the Grillenhugel vineyard which faces southeast and overlooks the town of Gumpoldskirchner. One of the best vineyard sites in the region due to its relatively high altitude and brilliant exposure to the sun, it is here that the Pinot Noir Grapes are able to grow to a ripeness that exudes complexity in the glass. The grapes are grown organically and, in the winery, this 100% Pinot Noir wine spends 16 months in barrels, 60% of which are new oak. This does a number of things to the wine, it softens the tannins, helps the fruit to develop and soften and it gives the wine some of its spicy, woody complexity.
This single vineyard Pinot Noir is made by the Familie Reinisch winery. Run by the three Reinisch brothers, this 40-hectare estate has become known for its truly delicious Austrian wines. And for those in the know, Austria offers British drinkers some of the best value, terroir specific wines around.
