COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Strategic Talent Management & Retention course. This program will equip you with the knowledge and capability to identify, attract, develop, engage and retain the talent your organisation needs to achieve long-term competitive success. You will explore why human capital is now the last major differentiator in highly competitive markets, how strategic talent management systems operate, and how organisations can protect themselves from the rising risks and costs associated with talent shortages and turnover. Through these learning areas, you will build the capability to manage talent in a way that strengthens organisational performance, continuity and resilience.
This course begins by examining what talent management is, why it matters and why talent is critical to organisational success. You will explore how even the best business ideas fail without capable talent and disciplined execution, and you will analyse the reasons human capital is considered the final major source of competitive advantage in modern organisations. This learning area also considers the cost of competent talent, the cost of talent departures and how these factors shape the strategic case for investing in structured talent management systems.
The next learning area focuses on the design and operation of the talent management system. You will explore the traditional talent management process, what constitutes critical talent, and how competencies align with the broader talent management framework. This section also introduces the role of the Chief Talent Officer (CTO), the strategic responsibilities they carry and the six categories used to assess an organisation’s reputation in the talent marketplace.
The next learning area examines how to analyse talent needs, plan talent pipelines and attract, recruit, select and employ the right people. You will explore shifting recruitment strategies, modern sourcing channels, employer branding principles and the importance of accurate forecasting to ensure that the organisation has the right people at the right time. This learning area also discusses how to prepare new talent through effective onboarding and how to structure talent development pathways that support growth and capability-building.
The next learning area focuses on talent performance management and reward strategies. You will examine how to assess performance objectively, how to provide meaningful recognition, how to manage underperformance and how to design reward systems that reinforce desired behaviours. This section highlights the relationship between performance management and retention, emphasising how fair processes and transparent communication contribute to long-term engagement.
The next learning area addresses talent retention directly, recognising that it is one of the most serious challenges facing organisations today. You will explore the strategies for retaining talent, the common myths about retention, and why the risk of turnover must be taken seriously. You will analyse the negative impact of talent departures on the organisation, including operational disruption, cultural decline and financial loss, as well as the personal impact on individuals whose teams become unstable.
The next learning area explores the external and internal factors driving the talent retention crisis. You will consider economic volatility, skills shortages, demographic shifts and changing employee expectations. You will also examine internal organisational drivers such as leadership capability, workplace culture, development opportunities and job design, recognising how these factors can either support retention or accelerate turnover.
By the end of this course you will understand how to build, manage and sustain a strategic talent management system, how to attract and develop talent in competitive markets, how to retain high performers, how to reduce the risks associated with turnover and how to strengthen the long-term capability and resilience of your organisation through strategic human capital management.
