INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Provide Safe Swallowing Support for People with Dysphagia course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in providing delegated dysphagia support, mealtime assistance, positioning support, texture modified food and fluid preparation, monitoring, escalation and documentation according to Speech Pathologist delegation, organisational procedures, consent requirements, supervision requirements and scope of role.
Providing safe swallowing support for people with dysphagia involves receiving and following delegation from a Speech Pathologist, confirming treatment and WHS requirements, obtaining consent, supporting therapeutic outcomes, assisting with safe eating, drinking and swallowing, and applying appropriate positioning and mealtime strategies. This work is important because people with dysphagia require support that is consistent with delegated instructions, communication needs, texture modification requirements, independence goals and safety procedures, while adverse reactions, difficulties and progress must be monitored, escalated and documented using professional terminology.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to receive delegation and gather dysphagia information from the Speech Pathologist; confirm WHS, interpreter and treatment requirements; obtain consent from the person or applicable third party; confirm therapeutic outcomes; provide delegated mealtime assistance for safe eating, drinking and swallowing; apply positioning strategies; prepare texture modified foods and fluids; use age and communication-appropriate motivators; provide time, opportunity and encouragement for swallowing skill practice; support swallowing assessment by the Speech Pathologist; deliver delegated supplementary treatment programs; monitor progress, success areas and difficulties with the Speech Pathologist, care team and person; identify and escalate adverse reactions or events; comply with supervision, delegation, scope and reporting requirements; and document rehabilitation information, feedback and symptomatic expressions using professional terminology.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can provide safe swallowing support for people with dysphagia by following Speech Pathologist delegation, confirming requirements and consent, supporting safe mealtime assistance and positioning, preparing texture modified foods and fluids, encouraging swallowing skill practice, monitoring progress and difficulties, escalating adverse events and completing required documentation within supervision and scope of role.
