Edwardian 14K Gold Four Vices Pencil CaseThis 14k gold Edwardian pencil case is a rare piece that depicts the four vices of the Hindu concept of Kali Yuga or The Age of Vice. The long, narrow rectangular case is adorned with relief detailing on both sides, and the bottom tip slides off, allowing a small pencil to fit inside the hollow case. The intricate relief images depict a dancing woman, a deck of cards, a bottle of champagne, and a racing horse. The images are a reference to Kama
This 14k gold Edwardian pencil case is a rare piece that depicts the four vices of the Hindu concept of Kali Yuga or “The Age of Vice.” The long, narrow rectangular case is adorned with relief detailing on both sides, and the bottom tip slides off, allowing a small pencil to fit inside the hollow case. The intricate relief images depict a dancing woman, a deck of cards, a bottle of champagne, and a racing horse. The images are a reference to Kama (Desire), the vice of sensual desire and indulgence; Krodha (Violence), the vice of cruelty and loss of compassion; Madya (Intoxication) and its destructive path; and Juta (Greed), the reckless pursuit of wealth at any cost. The images served as an artistic commentary on the ethical dilemmas of the Edwardian era—and was perhaps worn with a bit of irony that both condemned and celebrated the moral decline witnessed in the early twentieth century.
The pencil case is attached to a 5.5 x 7 mm bail and looks amazing worn as a pendant. The case measures 3 1/4” x7/16” and weighs 12 grams. The bottom piece of the case is marked with 14k 3 and the maker’s mark of a B with a trident through it—the mark for Battin & Co., a prominent jewelery maker at the turn of the century in Newark, New Jersey.

Video lectures, just as the subtitle promises
I was seduced into buying this set on the basis of NT Wright's reputation and advertising graphics showing Holy Land locations. Consequently, I didn't pay sufficient attention to the subtitle: "The New Testament in Its World: Video Lectures." And "lectures" is exactly what this set delivers. Talking heads, lecturing on the New Testament; sometimes in a studio, sometimes in eastern Mediterranean locations.
The content is solid evangelical biblical scholarship. My disappointment is the almost complete lack of engagement with the spectacular settings much of these films are shot in. It seems to me that Wright and his producers missed a real opportunity by failing more explicitly to relate their lecture content to the places where they're standing.
I give this set a three-star rating. The lectures are a perfectly fine introduction to the New Testament, if that's what you're looking for -- but you could put them on CDs or MP3s and listen in the car. The graphics add very little to these presentations.

Didn't get a lot out of it
My wife got me this for a Christmas present. Having previously made it through Eusebius' "Proof of the Gospel", she figured I could handle it. I know this is part of Zondervan's Academic product line and as such is not aimed at a general audience. What I discover was that if the audience lacks credentials in Philosophy or Theology, the incessant use of jargon and terminology that would most often only be encountered in a Seminary or Religious College is something I found off-putting.

Respectful Critics
Format: Paperback
Wright and Bird do an excellent job of discussing the New Testament. They offer insights from the most widely held opinions and then offer their own with a multitude of resources. It is an excellent resources within its self.

Best-in-class New Testament study
Format: Paperback
Excellent “Summa of the Summa” from NT Wright, a major modern theologian. Suitable for serious Catholic bible study, but not for lightweights. DVDs could be improved with more active material, and Bird’s Aussie accent is problematic for some US audiences.
