Blood orange peel, poached pear, flowering violets and toasted nuts swirl in the glass for an enticing nose on this NV Spumante Rosato ‘Rosanna’ from Ettore Germano. An Italian sparkling rosé made in the Champagne method from the Nebbiolo grape, the palate is elegant and complex with ethereal red berry fruit character. Strawberries dance with wild raspberries, blood orange and dried rose petals on a medium body with an undertone of toasted almonds and bread crust. A light but persistent bubble leads to a bright and fresh finish, with a final twirl of strawberry crumble that lingers on the palate. A special wine to share with interested friends at the start of an evening, delicious with prawn and scallop ravioli or white fish ceviche.
Sparkling rosé made from Nebbiolo grapes is a rare and wonderful thing. One of, if not the trickiest variety to grow, most successful growers of Nebbiolo use its favoured characteristics to make long-lived red wines. Only someone truly passionate about sparkling wines would be willing to forego some of their pernickety Nebbiolo grapes to make a sparkling wine, and thank goodness there is Sergio from Ettore Germano. Grapes coming from his youngest vines that retain the highest acidity, 80% of the Nebbiolo grapes are fermented in stainless steel and 20% in large, untoasted oak barrel, adding some velvety body to the wine. After 18 months on the lees, the wine is topped up with sparkling wine, not liqueur as is common in Champagne.
Ettore Germano is a great name in Piedmontese wine production. Based in Serralunga d’Alba, on the esteemed Cerretta hill, Sergio Germano is the fourth generation in his family to produce wines in this beautiful area. In recent years, Ettore Germano has changed its production style, today preferring to look back to traditional methods to allow the grapes to express themselves in the fullest and the wines have never tasted better. A huge fan of white and sparkling wines, Ettore Germano, unlike a lot of their colleagues in Barolo, also produce a host of sumptuous bottles of white and fizz.
