COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Securing the Right People for Work course. This program will equip you with the recruitment foundations, legal considerations, assessment techniques, onboarding practices, and retention strategies required to attract, select, and retain the best talent for your organisation. You will explore why hiring the right people is essential, how recruitment policies shape fair and effective decision-making, how to analyse roles, how to conduct professional interviews, and how to support new employees so they remain engaged and productive. This course also examines Australian anti-discrimination legislation and the responsibilities employers must uphold in every stage of the hiring process.
This course begins by examining the importance of hiring the right people and how recruitment policies guide consistent and lawful hiring practices. You will explore the recruitment process from role analysis to final selection, including the advantages of appointing internally and the advantages of appointing from external sources. This section explains how to start the recruitment and selection process, how to analyse the job description, and the requirements typically found in a person specification that describes the ideal candidate. You will also examine how to attract applicants, the internal recruitment methods available, and the methods used to recruit new people from outside the organisation.
The next learning area focuses on legal compliance and anti-discrimination obligations in Australia. You will explore the Australian Human Rights Commission Act, the Age Discrimination Act, the Disability Discrimination Act, the Racial Discrimination Act, and the Sex Discrimination Act. This section outlines what these Acts mean for recruitment, how they protect applicants, and how employers must ensure all hiring decisions are free from discriminatory practices.
A further learning area examines interview preparation, candidate assessment, and decision-making. You will explore how to make the right choice through objective assessment, the main purpose of the job interview, and how employers should prepare for interviews. This section covers how to shortlist applicants, how to interpret applications, and how to set up interviews effectively. You will also examine the functions of the interviewer, common interview formats, how to welcome interviewees professionally, and how to assess candidates using structured, reliable evaluation methods. This section concludes with methods for comparing candidates and how to follow up the interview to finalise the selection process.
Another learning area focuses on onboarding and supporting new employees. You will explore how to help new employees succeed, what to prepare before they arrive, and the information to provide on their first day—including workplace policies, job responsibilities, key contacts, safety information, expectations, and organisational culture details. This section highlights how early preparation and structured orientation increase confidence, reduce uncertainty, and support successful integration into the team.
The final learning area examines staff retention and development strategies. You will explore how to retain your staff through meaningful work, recognition, supportive leadership, clear communication, and opportunities for growth. You will also examine how to develop staff through coaching, training programs, career pathways, and regular performance conversations. This section reinforces how staff development strengthens engagement, supports workforce planning, and reduces turnover.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand and apply recruitment policies, analyse job roles, comply with anti-discrimination legislation, conduct structured interviews, assess candidates effectively, onboard new employees successfully, retain high-performing staff, and develop your workforce to support ongoing organisational success.
