About the work

To accompany the exhibition Eduardo Paolozzi at the Whitechapel Gallery, The Grantchester Pottery have created a series of fruit bowls inspired by Hammer Prints Ltd; a design company founded in 1954 by Eduardo Paolozzi and Nigel Henderson to create home furnishings including wallpaper, fabrics and ceramics.

Taking as a starting point Hammer’s use of ready-made pottery blanks as a surface to apply print, The Grantchester Pottery commissioned ceramicist Mizuyo Yamashita to create a series of thrown pots or ‘fruit bowls’ loosely interpreted from drawings supplied by the artists.

These thrown forms act as blank surfaces onto which The Grantchester Pottery scratched designs using the process of sgraffito – a traditional form of ceramic decoration. The scratched designs are composited from travel photographs of landscapes, interiors and the artists' studios, with recurring motifs such as eyes, flowers, bottles of gin, and lemons. They also reference designs by Hammer Prints, such as ‘Bark Cloth’ and ‘Sgraffito’.

In contrast to the traditional sgraffito process, each bowl is individually glazed using a varying palette of industrial glazes. The fruit bowls bear the pottery marks of both The Grantchester Pottery emblem, and in homage to Hammer Prints, a hammer symbol, which is unique to this edition.

About the artist

Established in 2011 and based in the UK, The Grantchester Pottery is a decorative arts company set up by artists Phil Root & Giles Round. Drawing historical precedent from Roger Fry’s Omega Workshops as well as other artists’ decorative arts studios like the Rebel Arts Centre, Hammer Prints & Atelier Martine, The Grantchester Pottery seeks to produce a series of utilitarian ceramics together with other decorative household items such as printed and woven textiles, wallpaper, painted furniture and hand painted murals.

Whitechapel Gallery editions are generously donated by the artists. All proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will rise as an edition starts to sell out.

For UK Customers, VAT is included in the price shown.

Great quality shirt, Recommend!
Size: X-Large, Color: Charcoal Heather, Pocket Description: No Pocket
This shirt is suprisingly comfortable, thick and fits very well. Not too short & not too long and is good quality fabric that streches with you. It's more than just a generic, thin long sleeve T-shirt. U can wear w/jeans or chinos, it's that nice. I paid 3x the price for designer brands w/logos that are not as nice. Price is right, too!

JUST "SHORT" OF PERFECT
Size: Medium, Color: Black, Pocket Description: Pocket
I have purchased several of these long sleeves with pockets in various colors. PROS: First, they are surprisingly high quality for an Amazon Essentials product. The material is thicker than I was expecting. I was looking for a thinner material to wear inside a shirt but I was pleasantly surprised. These are sturdy. I also liked the fact at the sleeve ends don't have elastic. They are straight open and loose allowing for free movement and it doesn't feel constricting. CONS: However, they are all a little short in length. And some colors are shorter than others indicating inconsistency and quality control issues. The burgundy I got was the shortest. Wearing them is a little frustrating as they are always rolling up and drafty especially in cold weather. If they were just an inch or so longer, I would have given 5 stars.

Well made, well fitting shirt.
Size: Large, Color: Burgundy, Pocket Description: No Pocket
I love buying products that pleasantly surprise. This is a well made shirt made with quality fabric. I also like that it fit me perfectly, it's wrinkly resistant and great value for the money. I've brought this awhile ago and it's held up great in the wash. It's one of those causal wear shirts you can wear just about anywhere. Oh, and the part that pleasantly surprised me the most is the fit. It fit so well, people ask if I've been going to the gym or am working out (I haven't). Who knew all i needed was a nice fitting shirt?

Great quality- thick and soft t-shirt
Size: X-Large, Color: White, Pocket Description: Pocket
These are the softest, thickest long sleeved t-shirts ever. Highly recommend...cannot believe the price and that they are Amazon-basics...quality is that of a good popular brand name at three times the price. Bought one last week and washed it up and it's so nice that I bought several more. It is true to size- looks a bit on the big size until you wash it and then it's very true to size. Hubby is 6'1" (205lb) and wears an xl.

Yeah, they shrink, a lot.
Size: X-Large, Color: Light Grey Heather, Pocket Description: Pocket
I knew they would shrink but I needed to know if so on permanent press cycle. Well they shrink a lot. I bought two and they were very comfortable and soft. I'm not returning since Amazon made it clear they will shrink. I'm the dummy.
