This is Johnson and Ward's 1864 map of France, Holland (the Netherlands) and Belgium. The map is divided into two separate maps within the same border. The left hand map focuses on France subdivided according to its various departments. An inset map on the lower left corner details Corsica.

The French Department system was established on March 4th, 1790 by the National Constituent Assembly to replace the provinces with what the Assembly deemed a more rational structure. They were designed to deliberately break up France's historical regions in an attempt to erase cultural differences and build a more homogeneous nation. Initially there were 83 departments but by 1800 that number increased to roughly 130 (only to be reduced again to 86 following the collapse of the French empire). Many of the departments that were created in 1790 remain the administrative districts to this day.

The right hand map covers both Holland and Belgium from Friesland to Luin xembourg. Inset city plans in the upper left quadrant detail Amsterdam and Brussels. In 1830, the Belgian Revolution led to the secession of Belgium from the United Kingdom of Netherlands and it's subsequently consolidation as the independent Kingdom of Belgium. Though Belgium had successfully attained self-rule, the Netherlands refused to recognize the new country until the 1839 Treaty of London.

Various towns, cities, railways, rivers and several other topographical features are noted with relief shown by hachure. It features the fretwork style border common to Johnson's atlas work from 1863 to 1869. Steel plate engraving prepared by A. J. Johnson for publication as plate nos. 78 and 79 in the 1864 edition of his New Illustrated Atlas.  This is the first edition of the Johnson's Atlas to bear the Johnson & Ward imprint and the only edition to identify the firm as the 'Successors to Johnson and Browning (Successors to J. H. Colton and Company).'

Good, but you sacrifice a few things in favor of style
Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 10, Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 10
It’s much better than other shoes out there, but the design is slightly confusing. The first thing you have to know is that the shoe won’t be mind blowingly soft, but it is around as comfortable as standing on something like vans shoes. The holes on top are both a plus and a minus, when you step in a puddle, your feet get instantly soaked, but just by walking around for a bit, they dry up again. Then these holes reduce the structural integrity of the shoe, so I expect the top to be the first part of the shoe that deteriorates, when usually for all my other shoes, it’s the sole that falls off first. With the holes, you can’t shine them the traditional way, you have to be more careful as you might get goo into the inside fiber. Finally you can’t run in these, they’re larger than your foot which is quite comfortable while just standing or walking, but I’m sure they’ll tear if you don’t watch your footing. If all that is okay with you, You’ll get quite a few compliments on it as you walk around, because these are beautiful and excellent as a dress shoe/loafer hybrid

Great gift for any guy!
Color: Black Leather/Black, Size: 12
These are one of 2 pairs of work shoes my husband will wear, the other one is the same shoe in brown. He says they’re the comfiest pair of dress shoes he’s ever had and the quality and ease of cleaning is incredible. They’ve lasted him years now so I’d say they’re well worth the money.
