Find a special place in your garden that you want to transform, and plant Rose Sensation false hydrangea vine! This very special schizophragma (pronounced sky-ZO-frag-muh) boasts beautiful marbelized rose sterile florets, each sail-like sepal a masterpiece of the painter's brush. The inner fertile florets are fragrant and open to reveal nectar-rich blooms that attract pollinators. Tidy foliage keeps the plant looking handsome, whether you grow it on a tree, wall, chimney, or pergola. What makes Rose Sensation different from other false hydrangea vines?
- Sepals are a beautiful marbelized rose-pink instead of the more conventional white
- Neat and tidy leaves are held to the vines by red stems
Details:
Name: Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Minsens'
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9
Height + width: 40-50' x 6 - 9' wide; width varies depending on structure and growth pattern.
Light: Full to part sun
Soil: Any well-drained soil will do.
Pruning: Pruning is rarely needed, though climbing hydrangeas may be selectively pruned to fill a specific space or to improve the habit. False hydrangea vines bloom on old wood, so trimming/cutting back will remove flower buds.
Water: Average water needs. Does not tolerate wet conditions.
Fertilizer: Fertilize once in early spring with a rose fertilizer if desired.
Bloom time: Summer
Bloom color: Sterile florets are pink/rose, fertile florets in center are white.
Uses: False hydrangea vines must be grown on a structure, but almost anything will do. Growing up the trunks of trees is one of the loveliest ways to enjoy them, but they cling equally well to man-made structures. Rose Sensation is unlikely to harm the trees or masonry it grows on, however, if you remove the plant, their dried old rootlets will cling to the surface for several years unless scrubbed off.
