Die gallische und merowingische Epoche war durch große Veränderungen in Kunst, Architektur und Schmuck gekennzeichnet. Insbesondere vollzog sich ein Wechsel von einfachen, funktionalen zu komplexeren und kunstvolleren Designs. Eine der bedeutendsten Veränderungen war die Einführung der Goldschmiedekunst. Dieses neue Handwerk ermöglichte die Herstellung von viel komplizierteren und detaillierteren Schmuckstücken. Die Goldschmiede waren in der Lage, wunderschöne Stücke herzustellen, die oft mit Edelsteinen und kunstvollen Filigranarbeiten verziert waren. Die Beliebtheit der Goldschmiedekunst verbreitete sich bald in ganz Europa, und sie wurde zu einem der am meisten geschätzten Handwerke der damaligen Zeit. Heute befinden sich viele der schönsten Beispiele gallischer und merowingischer Schmuckstücke in Museen und Privatsammlungen in aller Welt.
