Albinismus ist eine seltene genetische Störung, die durch die Unfähigkeit zur Pigmentproduktion gekennzeichnet ist. Es gibt 2 Arten von Albinismus. Okulokutaner Albinismus (OCA) betrifft die Pigmentierung in Haut, Augen und Haaren, während okulärer Albinismus die Augen betrifft. OCA manifestiert sich in einem vollständigen Mangel an Pigmentierung, was zu einer weiß-cremefarbenen Haut mit rosa Nase, Lippen und Pfotenballen führt. Nicht alle Hunde mit „weißen“ Mänteln haben Albinismus. Nicht-albino weiße Hunde können von Albino-Hunden unterschieden werden, da ihre Nase, Haut und Lippen normale Pigmentierung aufweisen. Betroffene Hunde zeigen Anzeichen von Photophobie bei vollem Sonnenlicht, die sich in normalem Licht im Innenbereich auflöst. Albinismus wurde in verschiedenen Rassen aufgezeichnet und wird durch unterschiedliche rassespezifische Mutationen verursacht.
