Aus den Werken von Kirchner, Schmidt-Rottluff , Pechstein, aber auch von Heckel, Mueller und Nolde spricht die Sehnsucht nach einem einfachen, von freier Liebe bestimmten naturverbundenen Leben. Karl Schmidt-Rottluffs grafisches Hauptwerk, der Zyklus 9 Holzschnitte von 1918 zeigt exemplarisch, wie Ahnenfiguren und Masken Afrikas dazu beitrugen, Gesten und Gesichter in ihrem Ausdruck zu intensivieren. Oft ging eine Afrikanisierung der Gestaltung mit einer Verinnerlichung einher.Ein zweiter Teil des Bandes zeigt, wie selbstverständlich sich die Beschäftigung mit Afrika von der Klassischen Moderne bis in die Gegenwart fortsetzt. Gemälde von Luciano Castelli, der dem Kreis der »Jungen Wilden« in Berlin angehörte, und Skulpturen von Karl Manfred Rennertz demonstrieren aktuelle Möglichkeiten »expressiver Gestik«.
